Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,090 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 369 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 27 at VAAU Aurangabad Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,323 meters, which accounted for 47% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 152 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 29°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 270°.
As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south east of Aurangabad. The climb was from an altitude of 3,008 feet above sea level to 38,665 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,657 feet in 35 minutes, covering a distance of 232 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 4 miles west of Mancheral and lasted for 78 minutes, covering a distance of 1,241 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 6 miles north west of Bang Bua Thong and lasted for 20 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 38,510 feet above sea level to 2,030 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,480 feet. The descent covered a distance of 125 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 06 at VTUQ Nakhon Ratchasima Airport was from the south west, with a heading of 61.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,263 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 06 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 369 meters, which was 42% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was 126 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -239 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 24°C, with a wind speed of 0 knots at 360°.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,605 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 140 minutes. The aircraft used 9,795 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at VTUQ Nakhon Ratchasima Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its approach and landing procedures. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the southwest, heading 61.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,263 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach to runway 06 was executed with a high degree of precision, resulting in a score of 99.7%. This indicates that the pilot's performance was nearly flawless, with only minor deviations from the optimal approach path. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed of 134 knots was also within the acceptable range.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's performance was equally impressive. The touchdown distance of 369 meters was well within the acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 126 knots was also good. However, the touchdown rate of -239 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the pilot could have achieved a smoother touchdown with a more gradual descent.
Despite this minor shortcoming, the overall performance of the aircraft during the landing was excellent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had successfully aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline. The local weather conditions were also favorable, with a temperature of 24°C and a wind speed of 0 knots at 360°.
The total landing distance of 868 meters was 42% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot had successfully managed the aircraft's descent and touchdown, minimizing the amount of runway required to come to a stop. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot had maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing of the Boeing 737-800 at VTUQ Nakhon Ratchasima Airport was a textbook example of a well-executed approach and landing procedure. The pilot's performance was nearly flawless, and the aircraft's performance was equally impressive.
