Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 7,217 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 7,217 ft of the 18,118 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 4,356 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 21R at Nellis Air Force Base, KLSV. The F14B aircraft accelerated down the runway, reaching a liftoff speed of 187 kt and covering a takeoff distance of 2,234 ft, which was 22% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 62 °F and a wind speed of 4 kt from 270 °, resulting in a 3 kt crosswind and a 2 kt headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the base, it began its enroute climb, starting overhead Sunrise Manor, Nevada. The climb from 2,878 ft to 6,183 ft, an increase of 3,305 ft, was achieved in just 1 minute and covered a distance of 6 nm. The aircraft then began its first descent, starting 3 miles north of RB18 Lake Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada. The descent from 6,250 ft to 3,318 ft, a decrease of 2,932 ft, was completed in 2 minutes and covered a distance of 11 nm.
The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time starting 10 miles east of RB18 Lake Las Vegas. The climb from 3,229 ft to 40,419 ft, an increase of 37,190 ft, was achieved in 3 minutes and covered a distance of 8 nm. Following this climb, the aircraft began its second descent, starting 11 miles northeast of RB18 Lake Las Vegas. The descent from 40,453 ft to 6,388 ft, a decrease of 34,064 ft, was completed in 10 minutes and covered a distance of 72 nm.
The final approach to runway 33L at KXTA Homey (Area 51) Airport was made from the south east, with the aircraft heading 312.0 ° at 3 nm and 1,838 ft above ground level. The landing was completed on the 18,118 ft runway, with the threshold height at 62 ft above ground level being above the target, and the threshold speed being well above the target at 161 kt.
The touchdown point was 3,004 ft beyond the touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed of 148 kt was good, and the touchdown rate of -8 fpm was perfect. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59 °F and a wind speed of 4 kt from 270 °, resulting in a 3 kt crosswind and a 1 kt headwind.
The total landing distance was 6,965 ft, which was 38% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the total flight distance was 102 nm, taking 18 minutes to complete. The flight used -6 lbs of fuel.
The F14B aircraft successfully landed at KXTA Homey (Area 51) Airport, with a final approach from the southeast at a heading of 312.0°. The aircraft was at an altitude of 1,838 feet above ground level (agl) and 3 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was executed on runway 33L, which has a length of 18,118 feet.
The threshold height at 62 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than desired when reaching the threshold of the runway. However, the threshold speed of 161 knots was well above the target, suggesting that the aircraft was descending at a rate that allowed it to maintain a safe speed. This is a positive aspect of the landing, as it indicates that the pilot was able to control the aircraft's descent effectively.
The touchdown point was 3,004 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively long distance. However, the touchdown speed of 148 knots was good, indicating that the pilot was able to control the aircraft's speed effectively during the landing. The touchdown rate of -8 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was able to touch down smoothly and without any significant impact.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to align the aircraft with the runway effectively. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 4 knots at 270°. The crosswind was 3 knots, and the headwind was 1 knot, which is relatively minimal.
The total landing distance was 6,965 feet, which is 38% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, but it is not excessive given the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to control the aircraft's roll-out effectively after touchdown.
Overall, the F14B aircraft landed safely at KXTA Homey (Area 51) Airport, with a score of 87.5%. While there were some minor issues with the threshold height and touchdown point, the pilot was able to control the aircraft's descent, speed, and roll-out effectively, resulting in a safe and successful landing.
