Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed and off the runway's 3° glideslope.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed and off the runway's 3° glideslope.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,758 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,758 m of the 2,295 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 806 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport (CYYZ), the Airbus A321 began its journey with a taxiing period of 19 minutes, covering 4 nautical miles to reach the runway. At 05, the aircraft initiated its departure roll, utilizing 76% of the 2,424-meter runway to achieve liftoff at a speed of 170 knots. The local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 13°C, with a gentle wind of 6 knots at 169°, resulting in a 5-knot crosswind and a 3-knot tailwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from CYYZ, it began its enroute climb, ascending from 1,527 feet above sea level to 32,876 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 144 nautical miles. The climb phase was followed by a level cruise, which started approximately 2 miles northeast of Sheffield, Pennsylvania, and lasted for 65 minutes, covering 572 nautical miles. The aircraft then initiated a second climb phase, this time from 33,201 feet to 35,172 feet in just 3 minutes, covering 30 nautical miles. Following this brief climb, the aircraft entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 123 minutes and covered 974 nautical miles. The descent phase began approximately 51 miles north of the British Virgin Islands, where the aircraft descended from 36,026 feet to 1,826 feet in 21 minutes, covering 120 nautical miles.
The final approach to Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM) was initiated from the west, with the aircraft aligning with runway 10 at 3 nautical miles and 1,788 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly above the target at 150 knots, but the touchdown speed of 137 knots was a little fast, resulting in a hard touchdown rate of -411 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 7.8 meters from the centerline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 1,574 meters, accounting for 69% of the 2,295-meter runway. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area in just 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,853 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 257 minutes and a fuel consumption of 11,077 kilograms.
The final approach to runway 10 at TNCM Princess Juliana International Airport from the west was initiated at 3 nm and 1,788 ft above ground level, heading 82.0°. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a good threshold height achieved. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 150 kt, indicating a slight deviation from the optimal landing speed.
The aircraft touched down 287 m beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 137 kt, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was hard at -411 fpm, suggesting a possible over-rotation of the aircraft. Furthermore, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 7.8 m from the centreline, indicating a slight deviation from the centreline alignment. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 28 °C and a headwind of 11 kt, did not significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance was 1,574 m, which accounted for 69% of the runway length. Despite the initial deviations, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a successful recovery of the aircraft's alignment during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing performance scored 83.8%, reflecting a satisfactory but not exceptional landing.
