Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,112 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,112 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 80 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 27 at EDBH Barth Airport. The aircraft, a Cessna Skyhawk, accelerated down the runway and lifted off at a speed of 54 knots. The takeoff distance was 434 meters, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle headwind of 2 knots from a direction of 270 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead EDBH Barth Airport. The climb was steep, with the aircraft rising from an altitude of 390 feet above sea level to 1,096 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. This rapid ascent was a testament to the aircraft's performance capabilities.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 8 minutes and covered a distance of 15 nautical miles. This cruise phase was initiated 1 mile southwest of EDBH Barth Airport, and it provided the pilot with an opportunity to assess the aircraft's performance and fuel efficiency.
As the flight progressed, the pilot began the final approach to runway 22 at EDCX Flugplatz Purkshof. The approach was made from the north-east, with the aircraft heading 217.0 degrees at an altitude of 842 feet above ground level and a distance of 3 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The local weather conditions at the time of the approach were similar to those at the departure airport, with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle headwind of 1 knot from a direction of 270 degrees.
The landing was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 51 knots. The touchdown distance was 55 meters, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was also good, at -199 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned from the centerline, by 51.2 meters.
The total landing distance was 387 meters, which accounted for 35% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned from the centerline, by 59.6 meters. Despite these minor issues, the landing was considered successful.
The total flight distance was 20 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 17 minutes. The aircraft used 8 kilograms of fuel during the flight, which was a relatively efficient performance for a Cessna Skyhawk. Overall, the flight was a testament to the aircraft's capabilities and the pilot's skills.
The Cessna Skyhawk aircraft successfully landed at EDCX Flugplatz Purkshof, with a score of 69.8%. The final approach was initiated from the north east, heading 217.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 842 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft was on a steady course for a landing on runway 22, which has a length of 1,112 meters.
Upon touchdown, the threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft touched down at the correct point on the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 54 knots, which may indicate a slight delay in the landing process. The touchdown distance of 55 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 51 knots was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -199 feet per minute (fpm) was also reported as good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
Despite the successful touchdown, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 51.2 meters from the centerline. This may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing path, which could be due to various factors such as wind, pilot error, or aircraft performance. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot, which is relatively minimal.
The total landing distance of 387 meters was 35% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits. However, the runway rollout alignment was excessively misaligned by 59.6 meters from the centerline, indicating a continued deviation from the intended path after touchdown. This may indicate a need for further training or adjustments to the pilot's landing technique to improve the accuracy and consistency of the landings.
