Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,986 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 97 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 34R at RJTT Tokyo Haneda International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,288 meters, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 163 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 7 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 18 knots from a direction of 288 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 12 knots and a headwind of 13 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb overhead RJTT Tokyo Haneda International Airport, rising from an altitude of 1,036 feet above sea level to 14,573 feet above sea level, an increase of 13,537 feet in 6 minutes and covering a distance of 35 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 9 miles south of Miura, Japan, and lasted for 4 minutes, covering a distance of 52 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent overhead RJTQ Miyakejima Airport, descending from 14,622 feet above sea level to 1,336 feet above sea level, a decrease of 13,286 feet in 15 minutes and covering a distance of 60 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 08 at RJTH Hachijojima Airport was made from the southwest, heading 70.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,042 feet above ground level and a distance of 3 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 08, which had a length of 1,986 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 139 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 99 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 138 knots, and the touchdown rate was heavy at -694 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 11.6 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 11.7 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 20 knots from a direction of 55 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 20 knots.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 153 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 36 minutes. The aircraft used 1,979 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at RJTH Hachijojima Airport, achieving a score of 90.1%. The final approach to runway 08 was initiated from the southwest, heading 70.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,042 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 138 knots, which was slightly above the target threshold speed of 139 knots. The touchdown distance of 99 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -694 feet per minute was deemed heavy, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slightly rough landing.
The runway touchdown position was found to be misaligned by 11.6 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to factors such as crosswind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing included a temperature of 15°C, a wind speed of 20 knots at 55°, resulting in a 5-knot crosswind and a 20-knot headwind.
The total landing distance of 856 meters was 43% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was also found to be slightly misaligned by 11.7 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the same factors that contributed to the initial touchdown position misalignment.
Overall, while the landing was considered successful, there were some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of touchdown speed and rate, as well as the alignment of the aircraft during rollout.
