Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,482 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,559 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at San Francisco International Airport (KSFO). This process took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile (nm). The aircraft then departed from runway 28R, with a takeoff distance of 4,173 feet, which was 36% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 150 knots (kt).
As the aircraft climbed out of KSFO, it reached an altitude of 37,595 feet above sea level (asl) after ascending 36,625 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 128 nm. The enroute climb started over KSFO and continued until the aircraft reached its cruising altitude.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 4 miles northwest of Blue Canyon Nyack Airport (KBLU) in Emigrant Gap, California. This cruise lasted for 3 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nm. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 38,224 feet asl to 38,978 feet asl, an increase of 754 feet in 2 minutes, covering 12 nm.
The aircraft continued to cruise at various altitudes and locations, including a 55-minute level cruise starting 3 miles southwest of Totem Pole Ranch Airport (CA38) in Calpine, California, covering a distance of 438 nm. The aircraft also experienced several descents, including a descent from 38,989 feet asl to 16,976 feet asl, a decrease of 22,013 feet in 23 minutes, covering 132 nm.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it entered a level cruise starting 9 miles southwest of Wilsall Airport (9U1) in Wilsall, Montana, lasting 3 minutes and covering 16 nm. The aircraft then began another descent, this time from 16,989 feet asl to 15,002 feet asl, a decrease of 1,987 feet in 3 minutes, covering 14 nm.
The aircraft continued to cruise and descend at various altitudes and locations, including a descent from 14,990 feet asl to 13,417 feet asl, a decrease of 1,573 feet in 2 minutes, covering 7 nm. The aircraft then began a climb, ascending from 13,551 feet asl to 14,233 feet asl, an increase of 682 feet in 2 minutes, covering 7 nm.
As the aircraft approached its destination, Billings Logan International Airport (KBIL), it began a descent from 14,294 feet asl to 8,174 feet asl, a decrease of 6,120 feet in 5 minutes, covering 18 nm. The aircraft then entered a level cruise starting 2 miles southeast of Skyrider Ultralightport (1MT2) in Billings, Montana, lasting 2 minutes and covering 5 nm.
The final approach to runway 28R at KBIL was from the east, with a heading of 295.0° at 4 nm and 1,123 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft landed on the runway, with a touchdown point 186 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 134 kt, but the touchdown rate was perfect at 165 feet per minute (fpm).
The total landing distance was 3,556 feet, which was 34% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 3 minutes and covering less than 1 nm.
The total flight distance was 831 nm, and the flight duration was 149 minutes. The aircraft used 11,866 pounds of fuel during the flight. The local weather conditions at the time of departure
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at KBIL Billings Logan International Airport, achieving a high score of 98.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 295.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,123 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft landed safely on runway 28R, which has a length of 10,482 feet.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 133 kt, which is a minor deviation. The touchdown point was 186 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 129 kt was a little fast, but the touchdown rate of 165 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway as it touched down. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 54°F. The total landing distance of 3,556 feet was 34% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft maintained its alignment with the runway as it rolled out after touchdown. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, and the aircraft came to a stop safely on the runway.
