MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 790 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 790 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 60 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a DA42-VI, then departed from runway 04 at KCDW Essex County Airport. The takeoff distance was 566 meters, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 79 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 220 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, while the tailwind was 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile west of Singac, New Jersey. During this climb, the aircraft ascended from 943 feet above sea level to 3,414 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,472 feet, in just 3 minutes and covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, starting 2 miles south of Kinnelon, New Jersey. This cruise phase lasted for 9 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time starting 2 miles east of Ogdensburg, New Jersey. During this climb, the aircraft ascended from 3,248 feet above sea level to 5,636 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,387 feet, in just 3 minutes and covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 2 miles northwest of Lake Mohawk, New Jersey. This cruise phase lasted for 14 minutes and covered a distance of 40 nautical miles. As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, starting 4 miles west of Narrowsburg, New York. During this descent, the aircraft descended from 5,254 feet above sea level to 2,037 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,217 feet, in just 4 minutes and covering a distance of 9 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 18 at 7PA3 Charles G. Kalko Airport was made from the north, with a heading of 168.0 degrees at an altitude of 2 nautical miles and 638 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 18 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 58 meters and a touchdown speed of 71 knots. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was hard at -479 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 220 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 260 meters, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the taxiing to the parking from the runway took less than 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
Overall, the flight covered a total distance of 78 nautical miles and took 41 minutes to complete, using 28 kilograms of fuel.
The DA42-VI aircraft successfully landed at 7PA3 Charles G. Kalko Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its pilot. The final approach was conducted from the north, heading 168.0° at 2 nautical miles and 638 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach speed and altitude were well-managed, setting it up for a smooth touchdown.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 71 knots, which was slightly faster than the recommended threshold speed of 72 knots. However, this minor deviation did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing. The touchdown distance of 58 meters was also within acceptable limits, indicating that the pilot had a good sense of spatial awareness and control.
One area for improvement noted in the report was the touchdown rate, which was recorded at -479 feet per minute (fpm). This is considered a hard touchdown, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to absorb the impact more smoothly. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and alignment throughout the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 35°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots at 220°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. These conditions contributed to a relatively straightforward landing, with the total landing distance of 260 meters being only 33% of the runway length.
The rollout alignment after touchdown was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability throughout the landing process. Overall, the DA42-VI aircraft's landing at 7PA3 Charles G. Kalko Airport was a success, with the pilot demonstrating a high level of skill and proficiency.
