Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,070 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,070 ft of the 13,408 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,892 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft taxied from the parking area to runway 30 at KVPS, a movement that required 16 minutes and covered 2 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 30, the Boeing 737-800 accelerated through a takeoff distance of 5,253 ft, representing 44 % of the runway, and lifted off at 147 kt. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 74 °F with wind reported as 0 kt from 354°, resulting in zero cross-wind and head-wind components.
Climb commenced approximately 1 mile north of Eglin Air Force Base, with the aircraft ascending from 1,051 ft asl to 33,687 ft asl-a gain of 32,636 ft-over 16 minutes while covering 93 nm.
Level cruise began about 4 miles southeast of Movico, Alabama, and was maintained for 55 minutes, during which the aircraft traveled 379 nm.
Descent was initiated roughly 1 mile northeast of 17XA Jacksonville/Hunter Field, Texas, descending from 33,423 ft asl to 1,820 ft asl, a loss of 31,603 ft in 27 minutes and covering 130 nm.
The final approach to runway 17C at KDFW proceeded from 1,295 ft agl to 80 ft agl in 99 seconds, and the aircraft met the stabilisation gate criteria.
Landing on runway 17C, which measures 13,408 ft, occurred with a threshold speed of 148 kt. Touchdown was recorded 532 ft beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 144 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 248 fpm. The touchdown point was offset by 13 ft from the centreline. Local weather at the time was 88 °F with wind 0 kt from 129°, yielding zero cross-wind and head-wind. The total landing distance was 4,810 ft, equivalent to 36 % of the runway, and the rollout alignment was assessed as very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 610 nm, required 117 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 10,123 lbs of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 conducted the final approach to runway 17C at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and was assessed as stabilised at the 1,000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope, centreline and speed all within limits. The aircraft descended from 1,295 ft agl to 80 ft agl in 99 seconds, maintaining the required parameters throughout the approach.
At threshold the height was good and the threshold speed was good at 148 kt. During flare the aircraft carried a touchdown speed of 144 kt, noted as a little fast, and the touchdown rate was fair at -248 fpm.
Touchdown occurred 532 ft beyond the touchdown zone, with the wheel track slightly misaligned by 13 ft from the centreline. The landing was completed under calm conditions (temperature 88 °F, wind 0 kt at 129°) and the aircraft remained on the runway after touchdown.
The total landing distance was 4,810 ft, representing 36 % of the 13,408 ft runway, and the rollout alignment was very good.
With a score of 94.7 % the landing was strong; refining the touchdown point to the aim point near 1,000 ft and reducing speed to the target VREF will tighten the margin and further improve consistency.
