Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,069 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,069 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 397 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a TBM 930, then departed from runway 35 at LGSY Skiros Airport, located on Skiros Island in Central Greece. The takeoff distance was 825 meters, which accounted for 40% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 91 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots at 315 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 3 knots. After departing from LGSY Skiros Airport, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport and reached an altitude of 27,719 feet above sea level. The climb covered a distance of 60 nautical miles and took 26 minutes, with an increase in altitude of 26,673 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 6 miles east of Tsagkarada in Thessaly, Greece. This phase lasted for 186 minutes and covered a distance of 706 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 36 miles north of Calvi in Corse, France. The descent took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 50 nautical miles, with a decrease in altitude of 16,998 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 19 miles south east of Antibes in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France. This phase lasted for 5 minutes and covered a distance of 17 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 8 miles south east of Saint-Raphael in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France. The descent took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 20 nautical miles, with a decrease in altitude of 9,349 feet.
The final approach to runway 31 at LFMC Le Luc-Le Cannet Airfield was made from the south east, with a heading of 310.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,486 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 31, which had a length of 1,069 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 87 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 396 meters, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 71 knots. The touchdown rate was excellent at -98 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots at 0 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 1 knot. The total landing distance was 703 meters, which accounted for 66% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking, which took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 858 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 244 minutes. The aircraft used 660 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The TBM 930 aircraft successfully landed at LFMC Le Luc-Le Cannet Airfield, achieving a score of 96.4%. The final approach was conducted from the south east, heading 310.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,486 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft landed on runway 31, which has a length of 1,069 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was excessively high at 87 knots, which may indicate that the pilot could have slowed down the aircraft more efficiently before touchdown. The touchdown distance of 396 meters was considered good, suggesting that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent.
The touchdown speed of 71 knots was a little fast, which may have resulted in a slightly longer rollout distance. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate of -98 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating that the pilot had successfully controlled the aircraft's descent and touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot had maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 25°C and a wind speed of 2 knots at 0°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot, which had a minimal impact on the landing. The total landing distance of 703 meters was 66% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot had successfully controlled the aircraft's rollout and brought it to a stop within a reasonable distance.
The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot had maintained control over the aircraft's movement after touchdown and had brought it to a stop in a stable and aligned manner. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the pilot demonstrating good control and judgment throughout the approach and touchdown phases.
