Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,184 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,559 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a Black Square Starship with the registration N786BP, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KHYA Cape Cod Gateway Airport. This process took approximately 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 15, with a takeoff distance of 3,778 feet, which accounted for 74% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 108 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 55°F and winds of 12 knots at 340°. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the tailwind was 11 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead Hyannis, Massachusetts. During this phase, the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 842 feet above sea level to 29,428 feet, an increase of 28,586 feet, in 12 minutes and covering a distance of 28 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 3 miles southeast of Bliss Corner, Massachusetts. This phase lasted for 87 minutes and covered a distance of 321 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 1 mile northwest of Suitland, Maryland. During this phase, the aircraft descended from an altitude of 29,621 feet above sea level to 3,879 feet, a decrease of 25,742 feet, in 8 minutes and covering a distance of 15 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile west of Saint Charles, Maryland. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started overhead Accokeek, Maryland. During this phase, the aircraft descended from an altitude of 3,649 feet above sea level to 1,336 feet, a decrease of 2,314 feet, in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 01 at KDCA Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was made from the south, with a heading of 359.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,310 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 01, which had a length of 7,184 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 110 knots. The touchdown point was 1,144 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 85 knots and a touchdown rate of -53 feet per minute, which was excellent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The total landing distance was 4,145 feet, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, which took approximately 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 382 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 122 minutes. The aircraft used 1,485 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft, Black Square Starship N786BP, successfully landed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (KDCA) with a score of 95.8%. The final approach to runway 01 was initiated from the south, with the aircraft heading 359.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,310 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 85 knots. The touchdown point was 1,144 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively safe distance. The threshold speed was also good, reaching 110 knots as the aircraft approached the runway. The touchdown rate was excellent, with a descent rate of -53 feet per minute, indicating a controlled and stable approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 63°F. The runway length at KDCA is 7,184 feet, providing ample space for the aircraft to land and roll out. The total landing distance was 4,145 feet, which is 58% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft was able to land and stop within a reasonable distance, with a perfect runway rollout alignment.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and stability throughout the approach and touchdown. The score of 95.8% reflects the high level of proficiency and skill displayed by the pilot during the landing.
