Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,006 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,092 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 28 at Ashland Regional Airport, KDWU. The Cessna CJ4 Citation took off with a takeoff distance of 1,810 feet, which was 32% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 148 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were a temperature of 60°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 269°, resulting in a 0-knot crosswind and a 2-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb overhead Wurtland, Kentucky. The climb from 1,539 feet above sea level to 25,010 feet above sea level was a significant increase of 23,471 feet in just 10 minutes, covering a distance of 45 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 1 mile northeast of Van Lear, Kentucky, and lasting 54 minutes, covering a distance of 385 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 12 miles southeast of Jesup Wayne County Airport, KJES, in Jesup, Georgia. The descent from 25,006 feet above sea level to 1,799 feet above sea level was a decrease of 23,207 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 58 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 9 miles northeast of Naval Station Mayport/Admiral David L McDonald Field, KNRB, in Jacksonville, Florida, and lasting only 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 23 at KNRB Naval Station Mayport/Admiral David L McDonald Field was from the northeast, heading 216.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,203 feet above ground level. However, the pilot decided to execute a go-around at 1,785 feet above ground level. The aircraft then landed on runway 23, which had a length of 8,006 feet. The threshold height at 76 feet above ground level was well above the target, and the threshold speed was too high at 114 knots.
The touchdown point was 1,650 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 95 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was excellent at -100 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 23 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 269°, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and a 1-knot headwind.
The total landing distance was 4,179 feet, which was 52% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 28 feet from the centerline. The taxiing to the parking from the runway took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 507 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 97 minutes, with no fuel consumption.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation aircraft successfully landed at KNRB Naval Station Mayport / Admiral David L McDonald Field, but the landing was not without some minor issues. The final approach was made from the northeast, heading 216.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,203 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 23, which has a length of 8,006 feet.
However, the threshold height at 76 feet agl was well above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high on its approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was too high at 114 knots, which could have contributed to the high touchdown speed. The touchdown point was 1,650 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 95 knots was a little fast.
Despite these issues, the touchdown rate was excellent at -100 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 23 feet from the centreline, which could have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 269°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 1 knot, which suggests that the wind was not a significant factor in the landing.
The total landing distance was 4,179 feet, which is 52% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, but it is not excessively long. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 28 feet from the centreline, which could have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's rollout path.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, it was still a safe and controlled touchdown. The aircraft's performance and handling were satisfactory, and the pilot's skills were adequate to handle the minor issues that arose during the landing.
