Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,553 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,553 m of the 3,041 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,183 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by a Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The aircraft began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 18 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 36L at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, with a takeoff distance of 2,241 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 197 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 80 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 1 knot. As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb from 1,010 feet above sea level to 34,683 feet, an increase of 33,673 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 103 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started over Heiligenhaus in Germany and lasted for 274 minutes, covering a distance of 2,356 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb from 36,174 feet to 38,180 feet, an increase of 2,006 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles. This was followed by a short enroute level cruise, which lasted for 20 minutes and covered a distance of 156 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its descent from 38,415 feet to 37,471 feet, a decrease of 945 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles. This was followed by another enroute level cruise, which lasted for 89 minutes and covered a distance of 715 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb from 37,477 feet to 38,514 feet, an increase of 1,036 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final descent from 39,438 feet to 1,334 feet, a decrease of 38,104 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 128 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 18 at HTZA Abeid Amani Karume International Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 174.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,272 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 18 took place at a speed of 152 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown point was 753 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 146 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was very hard at -541 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 13.6 meters from the centerline.
The total landing distance was 2,458 meters, which accounted for 81% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 15.5 meters from the centerline. The aircraft then taxiied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 4,101 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 525 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 63,291 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft has successfully landed at HTZA Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The final approach to runway 18 from the north was initiated at a height of 1,272 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft was heading in the direction of 174.0°, which is slightly off the centerline of the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 753 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the target. The touchdown speed of 146 knots was slightly above the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have been trying to slow down the aircraft too quickly. The touchdown rate of -541 feet per minute (fpm) was also very hard, which could have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were not ideal, with a temperature of 31°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 160°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 10 knots, which may have contributed to the difficulties experienced during the landing. The runway length of 3,041 meters was sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance of 2,458 meters, which is 81% of the runway length.
However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 13.6 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 15.5 meters from the centerline. This suggests that the pilot may have had difficulty maintaining control of the aircraft during the landing, or that there was an issue with the aircraft's navigation system.
Overall, the landing was scored 70.2%, indicating that it was not a perfect landing. However, the aircraft was able to safely touch down on the runway, and the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop without incident.
