Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,184 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 360 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 18C at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT) in Charlotte, North Carolina. The takeoff distance was 1,540 meters, which was 50% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 166 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 16 knots from a direction of 240°. This resulted in a crosswind of 14 knots and a headwind of 7 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile south of KCLT, rising from an altitude of 1,726 feet above sea level to 36,076 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,351 feet, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 111 nautical miles.
The enroute climb continued until the aircraft reached a cruising altitude, which was established overhead Raleigh-Durham International Airport (KRDU) in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina. The cruise phase lasted for 34 minutes and covered a distance of 318 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started overhead Columbus, New Jersey. The descent from 35,894 feet above sea level to 1,254 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,640 feet, took 29 minutes and covered a distance of 175 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05 at Theodore Francis Green State Airport (KPVD) was made from the southwest, heading 32.0° at an altitude of 1,189 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 05, which had a length of 2,184 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 144 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 357 meters, and the touchdown speed was 139 knots, which was also good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -291 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 6.0 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 70°. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,171 meters, which was 54% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 612 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 91 minutes. The aircraft used 3,803 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at KPVD Theodore Francis Green State Airport, achieving a score of 97.2%. The final approach to runway 05 was conducted from the southwest, with a heading of 32.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,189 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 144 knots. The touchdown distance of 357 meters was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 139 knots was also good. However, the touchdown rate of -291 feet per minute was only fair, indicating that the aircraft may have experienced a slightly higher rate of descent than desired.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 6 meters, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 70°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,171 meters was 54% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled path after touchdown. Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor issues with the touchdown rate and runway alignment that could be addressed in future flights.
