Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,991 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 307 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Li-2 Aeroflot USSR-69318 flight began with a smooth taxi from the parking area to the runway, covering a distance of 1 nm in 10 minutes. The departure roll took place on runway 32 at LRIA Iasi, with a takeoff distance of 506 m, which accounted for 21% of the runway. The liftoff speed reached 82 kn. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were favorable, with a temperature of 11 °C and a headwind of 10 kn.
The enroute climb started overhead Aroneanu in Iasi, Romania. The aircraft ascended from 906 ft asl to 5,398 ft asl, gaining an altitude of 4,492 ft in just 5 minutes and covering a distance of 11 nm. Subsequently, the flight entered a level cruise phase that lasted for 49 minutes, covering 127 nm from a position 3 miles southeast of Ciurea in Iasi.
The descent phase began 3 miles southeast of Izvoarele in Tulcea, Romania. The aircraft descended from 5,369 ft asl to 2,619 ft asl, dropping 2,750 ft in just 3 minutes and covering 9 nm. The landing took place on runway 34 at LRTC Cataloi, which had a length of 1,991 m. The height at threshold was 46 ft agl, and the speed at threshold was 76 kn.
The touchdown occurred 306 m from the threshold at a speed of 70 kn, with a VSI of -127 ft/m. The weather conditions at the time of landing were slightly different, with a temperature of 14 °C and a headwind of 15 kn. The total landing distance covered was 734 m, which represented 37% of the runway length.
Finally, the aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in less than 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nm. The total flight distance was 161 nm, with a total duration of 85 minutes. The flight consumed 298 kg of fuel during the journey.
Congratulations on achieving a landing score of 95.7%! Your performance during each phase of the landing process was impressive and overall, you demonstrated great skill and precision.
During the Approach Phase, your glideslope alignment was excellent, indicating solid decision-making and control as you descended towards the runway. This is a crucial part of the landing process, and your ability to maintain proper alignment speaks to your proficiency as a pilot.
Moving on to the Landing Phase, your threshold height was good and your landing flare was executed perfectly. This shows that you were able to judge the height above the runway accurately and smoothly transition into the landing flare, resulting in a stable and controlled touchdown.
In the Touchdown Phase, your touchdown rate was smooth, indicating a controlled and gentle contact with the runway. While your speed was slightly above the target, the touchdown distance within the touchdown zone is a testament to your ability to land accurately. Additionally, the runway touchdown position being only 8.3 m from the centreline demonstrates your ability to maintain precision during this critical phase of the landing process.
Finally, in the Rollout Phase, your runway alignment was solid, only deviating 9.3 m from the centreline. This shows that you were able to maintain control and keep the aircraft centered on the runway as you slowed down and taxied towards the terminal.
Overall, your performance during the landing process was exceptional, and your attention to detail and skillful execution are evident in your high landing score. Keep up the great work and continue to hone your skills to maintain such a high level of performance in future flights. Well done!
