Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,774 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,774 m of the 3,653 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 397 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 25C at Frankfurt Airport (EDDF). The takeoff distance was 2,199 meters, which is 55% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 176 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 15°C temperature and a wind speed of 9 knots at 170°. The crosswind was 9 knots, while the headwind was 2 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile south of Kelsterbach, Hessen, Germany, and reached an altitude of 30,528 feet above sea level (asl) after climbing 29,189 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 180 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 1 mile northwest of Assling, Bavaria, Germany, and lasted for 109 minutes, covering a distance of 884 nautical miles. The aircraft then started another enroute climb 6 miles northeast of Ikaria Airport on Ikaria Island, Greece, and climbed from 30,356 feet asl to 31,927 feet asl in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 10 miles south of Marathokampos, North Aegean, Greece, and lasted for 65 minutes, covering a distance of 499 nautical miles. As the aircraft continued its journey, it encountered a descent phase 16 miles west of Herzliya Pituah, Tel Aviv District, Israel, where it descended from 32,756 feet asl to 27,328 feet asl in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 18 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again 1 mile southwest of Ramat HaSharon, Tel Aviv District, Israel, and lasted for 66 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its descent 1 mile southwest of Ramat HaSharon, descending from 27,328 feet asl to 5,217 feet asl in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 75 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed once more 1 mile northeast of Highway H Highway Strip, Amman Governorate, Jordan, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its final descent 3 miles southwest of Highway H Highway Strip, descending from 4,952 feet asl to 3,654 feet asl in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 26L at Queen Alia International Airport (OJAI) was made from the east, heading 260.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,271 feet above ground level (agl). The landing on runway 26L was successful, with a touchdown distance of 399 meters and a touchdown speed of 141 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -284 feet per minute (fpm), and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 11°C temperature and a wind speed of 4 knots at 225°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,700 meters, which is 47% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,688 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 236 minutes. The aircraft used 11,532 kilograms
The Airbus A321 successfully landed on runway 26L at OJAI Queen Alia International Airport, achieving a remarkable score of 99.3%. As the aircraft approached the runway, it was heading 260.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,271 feet above ground level, indicating a precise and controlled descent.
Upon landing, the aircraft demonstrated a good threshold height, which is the height at which the plane touches down on the runway. This is an essential aspect of a safe landing, as it helps to avoid obstacles and ensure a smooth touchdown. The threshold speed of 146 knots was also within the acceptable range, indicating that the pilot had maintained control of the aircraft's airspeed.
The touchdown distance was another area of success for the aircraft, with a distance of 399 meters being well within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown speed of 141 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a slightly higher impact on the runway. Additionally, the touchdown rate of -284 feet per minute was fair, suggesting that the aircraft's descent was not as smooth as it could have been.
Despite the minor issues with touchdown speed and rate, the aircraft's runway touchdown alignment was very good. This indicates that the pilot's aim was accurate, and the aircraft was aligned with the center of the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 11°C and a wind of 4 knots at 225°, were relatively calm and did not pose any significant challenges for the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,700 meters was 47% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance for an aircraft of this size. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had maintained control of the aircraft's speed and direction during the rollout phase of the landing.
Overall, the Airbus A321's landing on runway 26L at OJAI Queen Alia International Airport was a success, with a high score and minimal issues. The pilot's skills and the aircraft's performance were evident throughout the landing, and the outcome was a safe and controlled touchdown.
