Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,559 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,559 m of the 4,001 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,492 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
This flight took place at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, where the aircraft, an Airbus A321, began to taxi from the parking to the runway, a journey that covered 4 nautical miles in 14 minutes. The plane then departed from runway 06L, with liftoff occurring at a speed of 162 knots after a takeoff distance of 942 meters, or 32% of the runway length.
The initial climb began just north of the airport, in Pendik, rising from a starting altitude of 1,384 feet above sea level to an impressive 35,222 feet in just 20 minutes, while covering a distance of 132 nautical miles. During the ascent, the plane encountered a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 24 knots, significantly influencing the flight's path.
As the plane approached cruising altitude, it entered a leveling phase of 82 minutes, with the aircraft flying level and relatively stable while covering 673 nautical miles. This leveling phase took place roughly eight miles northeast of Gerede in Bolu, Turkey. During this period, the plane would have maintained its cruising speed, utilizing the altitude it had gained during the earlier ascent.
However, the flight was soon set to begin its descent in earnest, with the plane starting the process eight miles northeast of Mingelchaur in Azerbaijan. In just 23 minutes, the aircraft descended from 35,191 feet to 7,226 feet, a drop of over 27,900 feet, as it traversed 127 nautical miles.
The plane then entered a short level cruise phase, lasting just eight minutes, over an area 10 miles southeast of Puta in Baku City, covering 25 nautical miles before entering another descent. This descent, occurring from 7,145 feet to 1,947 feet in just 5 minutes over an area 13 miles south of Zyrya, in another location in Baku City, reduced the plane's altitude by over 5,000 feet.
Following this, the aircraft briefly entered a level cruise period, lasting four minutes, over an area seven miles south of Qaracuxur in Baku City, as it covered eight nautical miles.
Finally, the flight concluded with a final approach to runway 34 at UBBB Heydar Aliyev International Airport from the south, aligning itself with the runway at a heading of 347 degrees and 4 nautical miles from the threshold. The plane then landed on the runway, which was 4,001 meters long, with a threshold height well above target but a too-high threshold speed.
The touchdown occurred 1,082 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a speed of 166 knots being too fast. However, the touchdown rate was relatively fair at -214 feet per minute. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.5 meters from the centerline. Local weather conditions at the time of landing included a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind at 16 knots from a direction of 330 degrees, with a slight crosswind and significant headwind.
After landing, the plane taxied to the parking area, which took 2 minutes and covered less than a nautical mile. Throughout the flight, a total of 993 nautical miles was covered in a time of 155 minutes, using 6,778 kilograms of fuel in the process.
A comprehensive report on the Airbus A321's landing at UBBB Heydar Aliyev International Airport is presented below. The aircraft scored a total of 77.0% during the final approach to runway 34 from the south.
One notable issue observed during the landing was the significant difference between the threshold height and the target height at 77 ft agl and 1,261 ft agl respectively. The excessive height at the threshold indicates that the aircraft was not in the optimal position for landing, which may have affected its control and maneuverability.
Another problem present was the excessively high threshold speed recorded at 199 kt. A higher threshold speed typically indicates inadequate braking or a loss of airspeed during the approach, which can make it difficult for the pilot to maintain control over the aircraft's descent and touch down.
Additionally, upon touch down, the aircraft landed 1,082 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was noted at 166 kt which was higher than the accepted speed. Touchdown speed is an essential parameter that dictates how quickly the aircraft touches down on the runway and how much runway it has available for braking. Touch down at 166 kt may have resulted in reduced braking efficiency.
While the touchdown rate of -214 fpm was found to be 'fair', this is an area of concern since it signifies that the rate was not within the expected range. An optimal touchdown rate helps in minimizing the stress on the aircraft during touchdown and reduces the severity of any potential damage.
There were a few factors that contributed to the challenges faced during the landing. Firstly, the wind speed of 16 kt at 330° posed a challenge due to its relatively strong headwind. However, the crosswind speed was low at 5 kt. A headwind of such speed demands greater skill from pilots as it requires them to make adjustments for the airspeed to match the expected values.
The length of the total landing run distance was 2,484 meters, which made up 62% of the available runway. The runway length was a sufficient length for the aircraft as the runway was 4,001 meters in length.
The aircraft's runway rollout alignment was, however, very good. A well-aligned rollout is crucial in preventing runway excursions or further accidents.
