Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 500 ft gate: no landing flap set, wings not level and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,284 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 532 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the OV-10 Bronco taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 31 at Y19 Mandan Mun, with a takeoff distance of 684 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 101 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of -7°C, with a wind speed of 7 knots at 103 degrees.
Following takeoff, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which started 1 mile northwest of Y19 Mandan Mun and lasted for 21 minutes, covering a distance of 59 nautical miles. The enroute climb phase began 11 miles east of ND87 Indian Hill Resort Airport Garrison, where the aircraft climbed from 2,235 feet above sea level to 2,738 feet, an increase of 503 feet, in 2 minutes and covering 5 nautical miles.
The flight continued with multiple enroute level cruises and climbs, with notable climbs from 2,733 feet to 3,361 feet, and from 3,174 feet to 3,917 feet, both of which took 2 minutes and covered 6 nautical miles. The aircraft also experienced a significant climb from 2,845 feet to 5,340 feet, an increase of 2,495 feet, in 3 minutes and covering 12 nautical miles.
As the flight progressed, the aircraft entered a series of enroute descents, including a descent from 3,351 feet to 2,735 feet, and from 5,366 feet to 2,556 feet, both of which took 2 minutes and covered 6 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 32 at KXWA Williston Basin Intl was made from the southeast, with a heading of 331.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 456 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 32 was characterized by a touchdown point 106 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 100 knots, which was fast, and a touchdown rate of -487 feet per minute, which was hard. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.6 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 269 degrees.
The total landing distance was 910 meters, which accounted for 40% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The flight then concluded with the aircraft taxiing to the parking area, a process that took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 155 nautical miles, and the flight used 339 kilograms of fuel.
The OV-10 Bronco aircraft successfully landed at KXWA Williston Basin Intl, but with some notable areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 331.0° at 1 nm and 456 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 32, which has a length of 2,284 meters.
However, there were some discrepancies in the landing performance. The threshold height at 61 ft agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high on its approach. Additionally, the threshold speed was too high at 113 kt, which could have contributed to the subsequent issues. The touchdown point was 106 meters beyond the touchdown zone, suggesting that the aircraft may have been slightly long on its landing.
Furthermore, the touchdown speed of 100 kt was faster than ideal, and the touchdown rate was hard at -487 fpm. This could have put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and may have affected the overall safety of the landing. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 3.6 meters from the centerline, which could have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 2 kt at 269°. The crosswind was minimal at 2 kt, and the headwind was 1 kt, which should not have significantly impacted the landing performance.
Despite some areas for improvement, the aircraft's runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. The total landing distance was 910 meters, which is 40% of the runway length. Overall, while the landing was successful, there are opportunities for the pilot to refine their approach and landing technique to achieve a more optimal performance.
