Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,525 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 300 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 09L at the Lunéville-Croismare Airfield, LFQC. The takeoff distance was 616 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 70 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 8°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 182°. There was a crosswind of 7 knots and no headwind. The aircraft began its enroute climb overhead Croismare, a town in the Grand Est region of France. The climb started from an altitude of 1,426 feet above sea level and reached 2,411 feet above sea level, an increase of 985 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile north of Croismare and lasted for 59 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 138 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 1 mile west of Biesland, a town in the Provincie Limburg region of the Netherlands. The descent started from an altitude of 2,311 feet above sea level and reached 1,823 feet above sea level, a decrease of 488 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Lanaken, a town in the Flanders region of Belgium. This phase lasted for 7 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 24 at the Zutendaal Air Base, EBSL, was made from the north-east, heading 234.0° at an altitude of 265 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 24 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 287 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed was slightly above target at 57 knots, and the touchdown rate was firm at -336 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 3.7 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 9°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 173°, with a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 641 meters, which was 25% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 9.9 meters. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 159 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 88 minutes. The aircraft used a total of -93 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at EBSL Zutendaal Air Base, achieving an overall score of 80.6%. The final approach to runway 24 was initiated from the north east, with a heading of 234.0° at an altitude of 265 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway at a speed of 57 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown distance of 287 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -336 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a slightly steeper descent than intended.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 3.7 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or during the landing roll. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 9°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots from 173°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots.
The total landing distance of 641 meters was 25% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. However, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centreline by 9.9 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the landing roll or during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely on the runway. However, there were some minor deviations in the approach and landing roll, which may be addressed in future training exercises to improve the pilot's skills and accuracy.
