Flight Score
Smooth the climb
A good takeoff has a defined shape. It also has a defined end. For an airliner that's thrust reduction and acceleration, commonly somewhere around 1,000 to 1,500 ft above the airfield depending on the operator, while for a light aircraft it's established at Vy with the flaps on schedule. Most simmers have no defined end to their takeoff, which is exactly why it never gets judged.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,737 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 389 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 12 at EGPK Glasgow Prestwick Airport, where the aircraft, a PA38 Tomahawk, accelerated down the runway and lifted off at a speed of 50 kt. The takeoff distance was 42 m, which accounted for only 2% of the runway's total length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 20 °C and a gentle wind blowing at 3 kt from a direction of 228 °.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead Monkton in South Ayrshire, Scotland. The climb was steep, with the aircraft rising from an altitude of 164 ft above sea level to 1,005 ft in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 1 nm. This rapid ascent was followed by a brief period of level cruise, which lasted for 4 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nm. The cruise phase took place 1 mile northwest of Monkton.
The final approach to runway 12 at EGPK Glasgow Prestwick Airport was initiated from the north-west, with the aircraft heading towards the runway at a bearing of 121.0 ° and an altitude of 708 ft above ground level. However, the pilot decided to execute a go-around at an altitude of 0 ft above ground level, which brought the flight back to the enroute phase.
The landing was eventually made on runway 12, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 50 kt. Although the touchdown speed was slightly above the target, the touchdown distance of 372 m was considered good, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions remained the same, with a temperature of 20 °C and a gentle wind blowing at 3 kt from a direction of 228 °.
The total landing distance was 658 m, which accounted for only 24% of the runway's total length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The total flight distance was 9 nm, and the flight duration was 15 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 39 kg of fuel during the flight.
The PA38 Tomahawk aircraft successfully landed at EGPK Glasgow Prestwick Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its approach and landing techniques. The final approach was initiated from the north-west, heading 121.0° at 2 nautical miles and 708 feet above ground level (agl). This positioning allowed the pilot to make a precise approach to runway 12, which is 2,737 meters in length.
The landing was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. The threshold speed, which is the speed at which the aircraft should touch down on the runway, was slightly above the target speed of 64 knots, reaching 66 knots. However, this minor deviation did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft demonstrated a good touchdown distance of 372 meters, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing. However, the touchdown speed of 50 knots was slightly faster than the ideal speed, which could have resulted in a slightly longer rollout. The touchdown rate, or the rate at which the aircraft descended to the ground, was perfect at -48 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained a stable and consistent approach to the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a gentle wind of 3 knots at 228°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, and the tailwind component was negligible at 1 knot.
The total landing distance of 658 meters was 24% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the length of the runway. This indicates that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process.
Overall, the PA38 Tomahawk aircraft demonstrated a high level of proficiency in its landing techniques, with a score of 99.2%. The pilot's ability to maintain a stable and consistent approach, combined with a good threshold height and touchdown speed, resulted in a safe and efficient landing.
