Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,991 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,991 m of the 2,519 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 964 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, taking approximately 7 minutes to cover less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 26L, with a takeoff distance of 1,440 meters, which is 47% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 159 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 6°C temperature and a wind speed of 5 knots at 320 degrees. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the headwind was 3 knots. The enroute climb started overhead College Park, Georgia, and the aircraft ascended from 2,009 feet above sea level to 35,396 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,387 feet in 23 minutes, covering 143 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 2 miles northeast of Omega, Georgia, and lasted for 164 minutes, covering 1,208 nautical miles. The descent started 11 miles northeast of Los Chiles Airport in Nicaragua and took 18 minutes to descend from 36,329 feet above sea level to 4,243 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,086 feet, covering 76 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 07 at Juan Santamaría International Airport was made from the southwest, heading 69.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,245 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 07, which is 2,519 meters long. The threshold height was well above the target, and the threshold speed was also well above the target at 151 knots.
The touchdown point was 509 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 127 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was firm at -395 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 30°C temperature and a wind speed of 19 knots at 80 degrees, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 19 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,871 meters, which is 74% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 1 minute to cover less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,443 nautical miles, taking 233 minutes, and the aircraft used 11,663 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at MROC Juan Santamaría International Airport, but with some notable deviations from the target parameters. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 69.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,245 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 07, which has a length of 2,519 meters.
The threshold height at 77 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than expected at the point of touchdown. Similarly, the threshold speed of 151 knots was well above the target, suggesting that the aircraft was traveling faster than intended at the point of touchdown. This was also observed in the second landing attempt, where the threshold height at 80 feet agl was above the target, and the threshold speed was again well above the target at 148 knots.
Despite these deviations, the touchdown speed of 127 knots was considered good, and the touchdown rate of -395 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, indicating a controlled descent. However, the touchdown point was 509 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which may indicate some issues with the aircraft's approach or landing configuration.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.2 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to crosswind or other factors. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 30°C, wind speed of 19 knots at 80°, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 19 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,871 meters was 74% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled rollout after touchdown. Overall, while there were some deviations from the target parameters, the aircraft was able to land safely and with good control.
