Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,996 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 362 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The Boeing 777-300 then departed from runway 23 at FNLU Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport in Luanda, Angola. The takeoff distance was 1,169 meters, which was 33% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 175 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 160 degrees. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southwest of the airport and ascending from 1,251 feet above sea level to 36,322 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,071 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase began overhead Lema in the Provincia do Uige, Angola, and lasted for 148 minutes, covering a distance of 1,154 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time starting 68 miles northeast of FEOD Ouadda Airport in the Central African Republic. The climb took the aircraft from 36,926 feet above sea level to 38,898 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,971 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 18 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase resumed 87 miles northeast of FEOD Ouadda Airport and lasted for 58 minutes, covering a distance of 479 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 46 miles northeast of Barah in the North Kordofan, Sudan. The descent took the aircraft from 39,044 feet above sea level to 2,527 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,517 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 123 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 36 at HSSK Khartoum International Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 0.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,254 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 133 knots. The touchdown distance was 361 meters, which was good, and the touchdown rate was fair at -268 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 7 knots at 14 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 6 knots. The total landing distance was 1,361 meters, which was 45% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the taxiing to the parking from the runway took 3 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,893 nautical miles, taking a total of 255 minutes, and the aircraft used 30,231 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at Khartoum International Airport, achieving a high score of 99.4%. The final approach to runway 36 was conducted from the south, with the aircraft heading directly towards the runway at an altitude of 1,254 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles (nm) from the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 133 knots (kn), which was within the acceptable threshold speed of 136 kn. The touchdown distance of 361 meters was also within the expected range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -268 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have maintained a slightly more stable descent rate.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind of 7 kn at 14 degrees. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kn, while the headwind component was 6 kn, which helped to stabilize the aircraft's approach and landing.
The total landing distance of 1,361 meters was 45% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had sufficient runway remaining for safe braking and rollout. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and evenly, allowing for a stable and controlled deceleration.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway with a good speed and distance, and a perfect runway rollout alignment. The high score of 99.4% reflects the pilot's skill and experience in conducting a safe and controlled landing.
