MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Arrival
Begin the flare with progressive back pressure and keep it coming until the sink is arrested, rather than flying it on flat.
What happened: The nose was barely raised in the flare and little of the sink was taken out, flying the aircraft onto the runway. This pattern usually carries through to a firm touchdown with a noticeable sink rate.
Watch for: Vertical speed indicator: a smoothly reducing sink through the normal flare band, not a steady rate into the runway.
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,871 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 936 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 30L at the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (KMSP). The takeoff distance was 4,316 feet, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 14°F and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 315°. This resulted in a 2-knot crosswind and a 10-knot headwind. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,845 feet above sea level to 33,921 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,076 feet, in 20 minutes and covering a distance of 121 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles northeast of the Worthington Municipal Airport (KOTG). This phase of the flight lasted for 824 minutes and covered a distance of 1,109 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 2 miles northeast of the Julian Hinds Pump Plant Airstrip (73CL). The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 34,126 feet above sea level to 1,377 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,749 feet, in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 97 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 27 at the San Diego International Airport (KSAN) was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 286.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,351 feet above ground level. However, the aircraft was required to perform a go-around due to an unknown reason, and it lifted off at an altitude of 11 feet above ground level. The aircraft then performed another go-around at an altitude of 12 feet above ground level.
Despite the go-arounds, the aircraft eventually touched down on the runway, with the touchdown point being 1,477 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 148 knots, which was faster than the recommended speed, and the touchdown rate was heavy at -692 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 13 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 64°F and a wind speed of 0 knots from a direction of 359°.
The total landing distance was 5,785 feet, which accounted for 84% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,352 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 232 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 22,894 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at San Diego International Airport (KSAN) on runway 27, achieving a score of 96.1%. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 286.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,351 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating a stable and controlled descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly above the target speed, registering at 148 knots. However, the touchdown point was located 1,477 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing path. The touchdown speed of 148 knots was also considered fast, and the touchdown rate of -692 feet per minute (fpm) was classified as heavy, suggesting a more abrupt landing than desired.
Despite these minor deviations, the runway touchdown position was only slightly misaligned by 13 feet from the centerline, indicating a relatively smooth and controlled landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 64°F and a wind speed of 0 knots from 359°, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind.
The total landing distance of 5,785 feet was 84% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating a stable and controlled deceleration after touchdown. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score despite some minor deviations from the ideal landing parameters.
