Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,281 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 449 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking to the runway at Vancouver International Airport, taking 16 minutes and covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, then departed from runway 26L, with a takeoff distance of 1,568 meters, which was 48% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 163 knots, and the local weather conditions were a temperature of 10°C, with a wind speed of 14 knots at 290°.
As the aircraft climbed out of Vancouver International Airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile west of the airport, rising from 1,020 feet above sea level to 35,987 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,968 feet in 24 minutes, covering a distance of 168 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 7 miles southwest of Midway Airport, lasting 149 minutes and covering 1,242 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 3 miles north of Belmont, Wisconsin, with the aircraft descending from 35,521 feet above sea level to 8,367 feet above sea level, a decrease of 27,155 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 86 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started 2 miles northeast of Funny Farm Airport, lasting 5 minutes and covering 16 nautical miles.
The final descent began overhead Batchtown Heliport, with the aircraft descending from 8,474 feet above sea level to 1,958 feet above sea level, a decrease of 6,516 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 10C at Chicago O'Hare International Airport from the west, heading 90° at 4 nautical miles and 1,289 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 10C was successful, with a touchdown distance of 447 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was slightly above target at 128 knots, but the touchdown rate was good at -199 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of -2°C, with a wind speed of 19 knots at 140°.
The total landing distance was 1,237 meters, which was 38% of the runway length. The taxiing to the parking from the runway took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,544 nautical miles, taking 223 minutes, and the aircraft used 8,769 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 10C at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport, achieving a high score of 98.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,289 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach was executed with precision, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a distance of 447 meters, which is considered good. However, the touchdown speed of 128 knots was slightly above the target, indicating that the pilots may have needed to apply more braking to bring the aircraft to a stop.
The threshold height at 60 feet agl was above the target, suggesting that the aircraft may have been slightly high on its approach. Nevertheless, the threshold speed of 135 knots was only slightly above the target, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft's descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -2°C and a wind speed of 19 knots from 140°. This resulted in a crosswind of 15 knots and a headwind of 12 knots, which the pilots successfully managed during the landing.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilots maintained a stable and controlled approach. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, suggesting that the pilots applied the correct amount of braking to bring the aircraft to a stop.
Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, with the aircraft coming to a stop within 38% of the runway length. The total landing distance of 1,237 meters was well within the acceptable range, and the pilots demonstrated excellent skills in managing the aircraft during the landing.
