Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 784 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 784 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 64 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna Skyhawk, then departed from runway 26 at BIFM Fagurhólsmýri Airport. The takeoff distance was 294 meters, which is 25% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 55 knots, and the local weather conditions were a temperature of 2°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 222°.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb from overhead BIFM Fagurhólsmýri Airport, rising from 237 feet above sea level to 6,132 feet above sea level, an increase of 5,895 feet in 8 minutes, covering 9 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then started 1 mile south east of BISL Hoefn Airport, lasting 30 minutes and covering 40 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent from 15 miles east of BITO Thorisos Airport, descending from 6,132 feet above sea level to 5,182 feet above sea level, a decrease of 950 feet in 2 minutes, covering 2 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started again 15 miles east of BITO Thorisos Airport, lasting 11 minutes and covering 14 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent from 7 miles south east of BISP Sprengisandur Airport, descending from 4,983 feet above sea level to 4,325 feet above sea level, a decrease of 658 feet in 2 minutes, covering 2 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started again 4 miles south east of BISP Sprengisandur Airport, lasting 3 minutes and covering 5 nautical miles.
The final enroute descent started overhead BISP Sprengisandur Airport, descending from 4,015 feet above sea level to 3,171 feet above sea level, a decrease of 843 feet in 2 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 09 at BISP Sprengisandur Airport from the west, heading 80.0° at 2 nautical miles and 1,177 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 09 at BISP Sprengisandur Airport was successful, with a touchdown distance of 38 meters and a touchdown speed of 36 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -322 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 49.6 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions were a temperature of -4°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 207°.
The total landing distance was 240 meters, which is 31% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 54.7 meters from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 76 nautical miles, taking 64 minutes, and the aircraft used 21 kilograms of fuel.
The Cessna Skyhawk aircraft successfully landed at BISP Sprengisandur Airport, but with some notable areas for improvement. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 80.0° at 2 nautical miles and 1,177 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 09, which has a length of 784 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, and the threshold speed of 35 knots was well below the target, indicating a controlled approach. However, the pilot was advised to be cautious not to stall, suggesting that the aircraft was close to its stall speed. The touchdown distance of 38 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 36 knots was also within acceptable limits.
The touchdown rate was firm at -322 feet per minute (fpm), which is a relatively high rate but not excessively so. However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 49.6 meters from the centerline, indicating that the pilot may have been off-center during the landing. This could be due to a variety of factors, including crosswind or tailwind conditions.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were reported as a temperature of -4°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 207°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, and the tailwind component was 2 knots. These conditions may have contributed to the misaligned touchdown position.
The total landing distance was 240 meters, which is 31% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly. However, the runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 54.7 meters from the centerline, suggesting that the pilot may have struggled to maintain control during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there are areas for improvement, particularly in terms of maintaining centerline alignment during the touchdown and rollout phases.
