Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,374 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 223 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 23L at Manchester Airport (EGCC). The takeoff distance was 1,622 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 179 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 21 knots from a direction of 250 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 20 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Mobberley in Cheshire East, England. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,220 feet above sea level to 6,473 feet above sea level, an increase of 5,252 feet, in just 2 minutes and covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 2 miles west of Knutsford in Cheshire East, England. This cruise phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time starting 1 mile north of Sandbach in Cheshire East, England. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 6,251 feet above sea level to 35,510 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,259 feet, in 21 minutes and covering a distance of 162 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 4 miles south of Lancing in West Sussex, England. This cruise phase lasted for 136 minutes and covered a distance of 961 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 4 miles south of San Cipirello in Sicilia, Italy. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 36,307 feet above sea level to 1,681 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,626 feet, in 27 minutes and covering a distance of 138 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05 at Malta International Airport (LMML) was made from the southwest, heading 54.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,417 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 05, which had a length of 2,374 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 147 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 221 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 142 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -359 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.6 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 20 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The total landing distance was 1,242 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,280 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 187 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 7,972 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LMML Malta International Airport, achieving a score of 97.2%. The final approach to runway 05 was initiated from the south west, with a heading of 54.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,417 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 147 knots. However, the touchdown speed of 142 knots was slightly faster than ideal, which may have contributed to a firm touchdown rate of -359 feet per minute. Despite this, the touchdown distance of 221 meters was within acceptable limits.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 5.6 meters, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. However, the local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 30°C and a gentle wind of 5 knots at 20°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots, which may have contributed to the slight misalignment.
The total landing distance of 1,242 meters was 52% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled descent during the landing phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft was able to touch down safely on the runway. However, there are areas for improvement, such as reducing the touchdown speed and improving the runway alignment.
