Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,717 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,717 m of the 3,452 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,137 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by a Boeing 777-300 aircraft. The pre-flight taxiing process took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles (nm) from the parking area to the runway. The aircraft departed from runway 34L at RJAA Narita International Airport in Japan.
During takeoff, the aircraft lifted off at a speed of 189 knots (kn) and covered a distance of 2,030 meters, which was 62% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 9°C, a wind speed of 13 kn from a direction of 280°, with a crosswind of 10 kn and a headwind of 8 kn.
After takeoff, the aircraft began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northwest of RJAA Narita International Airport. The climb phase involved a total increase in altitude of 30,020 feet (ft) over a distance of 58 nm, taking approximately 21 minutes to complete. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 14 nm.
The flight continued with multiple enroute climb and level cruise phases, with the aircraft passing through various geographical locations, including Miura, Yugawara, Fujinomiya, and RCCM Qimei in Taiwan. The climb phases involved increases in altitude ranging from 2,721 ft to 30,020 ft, while the level cruise phases lasted from 2 minutes to 141 minutes.
The flight also involved multiple descent phases, with the aircraft descending from altitudes ranging from 39,294 ft to 5,167 ft. The descent phases were initiated at various locations, including 49 miles west of RCCM Qimei, 66 miles southwest of RCCM Qimei, and 73 miles southeast of Jiazi in China.
The final approach to runway 25C at VHHH Hong Kong International Airport was initiated from the east, with the aircraft heading 254.0° at an altitude of 1,188 ft above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nm from the runway threshold. The landing was completed on runway 25C, which had a length of 3,452 meters.
The landing was characterized by a touchdown point that was 665 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 177 kn, which was excessively fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -225 feet per minute (fpm), and the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 46.1 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19°C, a wind speed of 7 kn from a direction of 350°, with a crosswind of 7 kn and a tailwind of 1 kn.
The total landing distance was 2,580 meters, which was 75% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was significantly misaligned by 35.3 meters from the centerline. The post-landing taxiing process took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nm from the runway to the parking area.
The total flight distance was 1,659 nm, taking approximately 295 minutes to complete, and the aircraft used a total of 41,569 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft has successfully landed at VHHH Hong Kong International Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The final approach to runway 25C from the east was initiated at a height of 1,188 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft was heading 254.0 degrees at the time of the approach.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 665 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 177 knots was also excessively fast, indicating that the pilot may have been unable to slow the aircraft down sufficiently before touchdown. The touchdown rate of -225 feet per minute was fair, but not ideal.
The runway touchdown position was also significantly misaligned, with the aircraft deviating from the centerline by 46.1 meters. This misalignment was further exacerbated during the runway rollout, where the aircraft was still 35.3 meters off-centerline. The threshold height at 59 feet agl was slightly above the target, and the threshold speed of 186 knots was excessively high.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 7 knots from 350 degrees. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the tailwind component was a minimal 1 knot. The total landing distance of 2,580 meters was 75% of the available runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop safely within the confines of the runway.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several areas for improvement, including the excessive touchdown speed, misaligned touchdown position, and significant deviation from the centerline during the runway rollout. These issues highlight the need for the pilot to refine their landing technique and adhere more closely to standard operating procedures.
