Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,498 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 509 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a CRJ700ER, then departed from runway 01 at RJFO Oita Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,054 meters, which accounted for 35% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 142 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and winds of 8 knots at a direction of 110 degrees. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the tailwind component was 3 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead RJFO Oita Airport and took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,072 feet above sea level to 25,384 feet above sea level, an increase of 24,312 feet in 14 minutes and covering a distance of 89 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles north of Kochi and lasted for 16 minutes, covering a distance of 135 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 7 miles north of Owase and took the aircraft from an altitude of 25,435 feet above sea level to 4,225 feet above sea level, a decrease of 21,210 feet in 7 minutes and covering a distance of 42 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 6 miles north of Toba and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, which started 10 miles south of Taketoyo and took the aircraft from an altitude of 3,687 feet above sea level to 1,391 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,296 feet in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 36 at RJGG Chubu Centrair International Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 349.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,368 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 36, which had a length of 3,498 meters. The threshold height at 64 feet above ground level was above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 131 knots.
The touchdown point was 87 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 114 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was fair at -243 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and winds of 11 knots at a direction of 340 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 11 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,144 meters, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 284 nautical miles, which was covered in 54 minutes, and the aircraft used 1,458 kilograms of fuel.
The CRJ700ER aircraft successfully landed at RJGG Chubu Centrair International Airport, achieving a score of 95.1%. The final approach to runway 36 was initiated from the south, with the aircraft heading 349.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,368 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the touchdown point located 87 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 114 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -243 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the aircraft could have maintained a more gradual descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 340°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 11 knots, which the aircraft successfully navigated. The runway threshold height at 64 feet agl was above the target, but the threshold speed of 131 knots was within the acceptable range.
The total landing distance of 1,144 meters was 33% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft maintained a stable and controlled trajectory during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and stability throughout the approach and landing phases.
