Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,094 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 492 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Carenado PA44, then departed from runway 34 at UBBQ Gabala International Airport. The takeoff distance was 361 meters, which accounted for 10% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 81 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, a wind speed of 6 knots at 320 degrees, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile north of UBBQ Gabala International Airport. The climb took place from an altitude of 2,162 feet above sea level to 4,492 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,330 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 4 miles northwest of UBBQ Gabala International Airport and lasted for 22 minutes, covering a distance of 49 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent 4 miles west of Qax. The descent took place from an altitude of 4,071 feet above sea level to 2,118 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,953 feet in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 33 at UBBY Zaqatala International Airport was made from the southeast, with the aircraft heading 339.0 degrees at an altitude of 868 feet above ground level and a distance of 3 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 33 at UBBY Zaqatala International Airport was successful, with the touchdown point being 48 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 58 knots, which was considered good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -135 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.9 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius, a wind speed of 9 knots at 319 degrees, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 8 knots.
The total landing distance was 857 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. The total flight distance was 68 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 36 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 38 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The PA44 aircraft, registered as G-BGCP, successfully landed at UBBY Zaqatala International Airport on runway 33. The final approach was initiated from the south east, heading 339.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 868 feet above ground level. The aircraft demonstrated a good threshold height, indicating a well-executed approach.
Upon touchdown, the threshold speed was maintained at 71 knots, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing. The touchdown point was located 48 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, but this deviation was not significant enough to impact the overall landing performance. The touchdown speed of 58 knots was also within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -135 feet per minute was smooth, indicating a controlled descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.9 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or a minor issue with the aircraft's alignment during the landing. However, this misalignment did not appear to have a significant impact on the overall landing performance.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 23°C and a wind speed of 9 knots from 319°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing.
The total landing distance of 857 meters was 41% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was well under control during the landing and rollout phases. Overall, the landing was executed safely and efficiently, with a score of 97.2%.
