Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,667 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 377 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 03 at MGCB Coban Airport, where the aircraft, an ATR 72, accelerated down the 759-meter runway, covering 80% of its length. The takeoff distance was sufficient, and the liftoff speed was achieved at 110 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and a gentle headwind of 5 knots from a direction of 33 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile northwest of Coban, rising from an initial altitude of 5,441 feet above sea level to a cruising altitude of 19,512 feet. This climb phase covered a distance of 49 nautical miles and took 14 minutes to complete, with the aircraft increasing its altitude by 14,072 feet. The climb was followed by a level cruise phase that started 4 miles northwest of Rio Hondo, covering a distance of 102 nautical miles in 22 minutes.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent 6 miles south of MHLE La Esperanza Airport, La Esperanza, Honduras, where it descended from 19,678 feet to 9,369 feet in 8 minutes, covering a distance of 36 nautical miles. This was followed by another level cruise phase that started 4 miles east of San Antonio del Norte, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles in 12 minutes. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting overhead Santa Ana, Honduras, where it descended from 9,188 feet to 4,660 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 02 at MHTG Toncontín International Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 18.0 degrees at 1 nautical mile and 1,354 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 106 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown distance was good, covering 376 meters of the 1,667-meter runway. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and a gentle headwind of 5 knots from a direction of 350 degrees. The crosswind component was 3 knots, and the headwind component was 5 knots. The total landing distance was 616 meters, which was 37% of the runway length. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking 3 minutes to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 217 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 64 minutes. The aircraft used 537 kilograms of fuel during the flight. Overall, the flight was successful, with the aircraft performing well in terms of takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, and landing.
The ATR 72 aircraft successfully landed at MHTG Toncontín International Airport, achieving a high score of 97.1%. The final approach to runway 02 was conducted from the south, with a heading of 18.0° at 1 nautical mile and 1,354 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated good control and precision during the approach, ultimately landing safely on the runway.
The landing performance was satisfactory, with a threshold height that met the required standards. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 118 knots, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly over-controlled during the approach. The touchdown distance of 376 meters was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 106 knots was a little fast, but not excessively so.
The touchdown rate of -302 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, indicating a controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 32°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from 350°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly fast touchdown speed.
The total landing distance of 616 meters was 37% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was properly controlled during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing performance of the ATR 72 aircraft was satisfactory, with some minor deviations from the target parameters.
