Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,193 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,193 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 142 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna Skyhawk, then departed from runway 12 at BIKP Kópasker Airport. The takeoff distance was 305 meters, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 62 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 1 °C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 116 °. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile east of BIKP Kópasker Airport, rising from an altitude of 1,034 feet above sea level to 3,171 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,136 feet, in just 4 minutes and covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 6 miles south east of BIKP Kópasker Airport and lasted for 9 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 14 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 7 miles west of THorshoefn, where the aircraft descended from an altitude of 2,928 feet above sea level to 524 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,404 feet, in 6 minutes and covering a distance of 8 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 01 at BITN Þórshöfn Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 358.0 ° at an altitude of 457 feet above ground level and a distance of 1 nautical mile from the runway. The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 50 knots and a touchdown distance of 139 meters. The touchdown rate was excellent at -83 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -0 °C and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 178 °. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance was 711 meters, which accounted for 60% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area in less than 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 31 nautical miles and took 27 minutes to complete, using 9 kilograms of fuel.
The Cessna Skyhawk successfully landed at BITN Þórshöfn Airport, achieving a high score of 98.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the south, heading 358.0° at a distance of 1 nautical mile and an altitude of 457 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot maintained a steady course, ensuring a smooth final approach to runway 01.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 55 knots, which was slightly below the target threshold speed. However, this did not affect the overall performance of the landing, as the touchdown distance of 139 meters was considered good. The touchdown speed of 50 knots was also within acceptable limits, indicating a well-controlled descent.
One of the standout aspects of this landing was the excellent touchdown rate of -83 feet per minute (fpm). This suggests that the pilot was able to maintain a stable and controlled approach, resulting in a smooth touchdown. Additionally, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to accurately align the aircraft with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of -0°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from 178°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a slight tailwind of 2 knots. The pilot effectively managed these conditions, ensuring a safe and controlled landing.
The total landing distance of 711 meters was 60% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, this landing was a testament to the pilot's skill and experience, as well as the aircraft's performance. The Cessna Skyhawk handled the challenging weather conditions and runway environment with ease, resulting in a safe and successful landing.
