Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 594 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 594 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 462 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 22 at EDLO Oerlinghausen Airfield, a small airfield in Germany. The Cessna Skyhawk aircraft accelerated down the runway, covering a distance of 478 meters, which was 80% of the runway's length. The liftoff speed was achieved at 69 knots, marking the beginning of the aircraft's ascent into the air.
As the aircraft climbed to a safe altitude, it entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. This brief period of steady flight allowed the pilot to assess the aircraft's performance and adjust its configuration as needed.
The final approach to runway 22 at EDLO Oerlinghausen Airfield was initiated from a position 1 mile southwest of the airfield, with the aircraft heading towards the runway from the north. The approach was made at an altitude of 110 feet above ground level, with the aircraft maintaining a steady heading of 217.0 degrees.
However, the landing itself was not without issues. The threshold height at 65 feet above ground level was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than desired as it approached the runway. Furthermore, the threshold speed was excessively high at 81 knots, suggesting that the pilot may have been unable to slow the aircraft down sufficiently before touchdown.
The touchdown point was also excessively long, with the aircraft using more than 75% of the available runway. The touchdown speed of 65 knots was faster than desired, and the touchdown rate was firm at -314 feet per minute. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.9 meters from the centerline, indicating that the pilot may have been unable to maintain a straight course during the final approach.
The total landing distance was 734 meters, which was 123% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned, with the aircraft deviating from the centerline by 11.4 meters.
In terms of fuel consumption, the flight used 2 kilograms of fuel, covering a total distance of 2 nautical miles. The local weather conditions during the flight were characterized by a temperature of 17°C and a wind speed of 23 knots, with a crosswind component of 23 knots and a tailwind component of 1 knot.
The Cessna Skyhawk aircraft has successfully landed at EDLO Oerlinghausen Airfield, but the landing was not without its issues. The final approach to runway 22 from the north was initiated at a heading of 217.0°, with the aircraft at 0 nm and 110 ft above ground level (agl). The landing was made on a runway with a length of 594 m, which is a relatively short runway.
However, the landing was not executed perfectly. The threshold height at 65 ft agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was higher than it should have been at the point of touchdown. Furthermore, the threshold speed was excessively high at 81 kt, which is faster than the recommended speed for landing. This could have put additional stress on the aircraft and its occupants.
The touchdown point was also excessively long, using more than 75% of the available runway. This suggests that the aircraft was not aligned properly with the runway centerline, or that the pilot may have been too slow to react to the situation. The touchdown speed of 65 kt was also fast, and the touchdown rate was firm at -314 fpm, which could have resulted in a bumpy ride for the occupants.
In addition to these issues, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.9 m from the centerline, which could have made the landing more difficult and increased the risk of a runway excursion. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were not ideal, with a temperature of 16 °C and a wind of 17 kt at 125°. However, the crosswind component was relatively strong at 17 kt, and the tailwind component was minimal at 1 kt.
The total landing distance was 734 m, which is 123% of the runway length. This suggests that the aircraft took a long time to come to a stop after touchdown, which could have increased the risk of a runway excursion. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 11.4 m from the centerline, which could have made it more difficult for the pilot to control the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the Cessna Skyhawk aircraft was able to land safely at EDLO Oerlinghausen Airfield, the landing was not executed perfectly, and there were several issues that need to be addressed to improve the safety and efficiency of the landing.
