Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 3,041 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 3,041 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 236 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Baron taxiing from the parking area to the runway at CYQB Quebec Jean Lesage International Airport, a process that took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 06, and the takeoff distance was 1,275 feet, which accounted for 14% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 94 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 29 degrees Fahrenheit and winds blowing at 15 knots from an 80-degree direction. The crosswind was 9 knots, and the headwind was 13 knots. The enroute climb started overhead CYQB Quebec Jean Lesage International Airport, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,244 feet above sea level to 2,243 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,000 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 1 mile northwest of CAMB Aérodrome du Mont-Bélair Quebec, where the aircraft descended from 2,254 feet above sea level to 1,646 feet above sea level, a decrease of 608 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 2 miles northeast of CNV9 Québec / Neuville Airport, where the aircraft maintained a steady altitude for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 06 at CNV9 Québec / Neuville Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 53.0 degrees at 2 nautical miles and 791 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 06 was successful, with a runway length of 3,041 feet. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was too high at 85 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 232 feet, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 80 knots. The touchdown rate was excellent at -58 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions during the landing were the same as before, with a temperature of 29 degrees Fahrenheit and winds blowing at 15 knots from an 82-degree direction. The crosswind was 9 knots, and the headwind was 13 knots. The total flight distance was 28 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 12 minutes, using 32 pounds of fuel.
The aircraft in question, a Baron, successfully landed at CNV9 Québec / Neuville Airport, achieving a remarkable score of 99.3%. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 53.0° at 2 nautical miles and 791 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot's decision to land on runway 06, which has a length of 3,041 feet, was a good one, as the threshold height was satisfactory.
However, there were a few areas for improvement during the landing. The threshold speed was too high at 85 knots, which may have put additional stress on the aircraft. Additionally, the touchdown speed of 80 knots was slightly faster than ideal, which could have resulted in a slightly longer rollout. On the positive side, the touchdown distance was good at 232 feet, and the touchdown rate was excellent at -58 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The runway touchdown alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained a stable and consistent approach path. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 29°F and winds of 15 knots at 82°. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the headwind component was 13 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly higher threshold speed and touchdown speed.
Overall, the pilot's performance during the landing was impressive, and the aircraft's handling characteristics were well within acceptable limits. With a few minor adjustments to the approach and landing technique, the pilot could potentially achieve an even higher score in the future.
