Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,373 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 409 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 04R at PHNL Daniel K Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. The takeoff distance was 1,344 meters, which accounted for 49% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 22°C and a wind speed of 2 knots at 330°. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 0 knots. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started approximately 1 mile northeast of the airport, with the aircraft climbing from 1,089 feet above sea level to 35,835 feet above sea level. This climb covered a distance of 214 nautical miles and took 31 minutes, with an increase of 34,746 feet in altitude.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 114 minutes and covered a distance of 810 nautical miles. The cruise phase took place at a specific location with coordinates of 22.4960528° latitude and -161.5513964° longitude.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent from 36,137 feet above sea level to 1,371 feet above sea level. This descent covered a distance of 112 nautical miles and took 23 minutes, with a decrease of 34,766 feet in altitude. The descent phase started at a location with coordinates of 27.2846425° latitude and -175.4828286° longitude.
The final approach to runway 24 at PMDY Henderson Field was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 248.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,335 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 2,373 meters, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good at 141 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 411 meters, and the touchdown speed was 131 knots, which was also good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -234 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 18°C and a wind speed of 10 knots at 275°. The crosswind was 5 knots, and the headwind was 9 knots.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,144 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 181 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 8,358 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at PMDY Henderson Field, with a final approach score of 99.3%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the east, heading 248.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,335 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise landing on runway 24, which has a length of 2,373 meters.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. The threshold speed of 141 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's control over the aircraft's descent and speed. The touchdown distance of 411 meters was also good, indicating that the pilot had successfully controlled the aircraft's descent and speed to achieve a smooth touchdown.
The touchdown speed of 131 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -234 feet per minute (fpm) was fair. However, the touchdown rate could be improved to achieve a smoother touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had successfully aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from 275°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 9 knots. These conditions did not pose a significant challenge to the pilot, and the aircraft was able to land safely.
The total landing distance of 1,275 meters was 54% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This indicates that the pilot had successfully controlled the aircraft's descent and speed to achieve a smooth and efficient landing. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot had successfully controlled the aircraft's roll-out and had aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good control over the aircraft's descent, speed, and alignment. However, there is room for improvement in terms of touchdown rate to achieve a smoother touchdown.
