Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,876 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,876 m of the 3,295 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 989 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The 1.69 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, the Airbus A321 began its journey with a taxiing period of 19 minutes, covering 4 nautical miles to reach the runway. With a local temperature of 4 °C and a wind of 16 kt at 160°, the aircraft took off from runway 17, utilizing 996 meters, or 41% of the runway, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 153 kt.
As the aircraft climbed to 36,001 feet above sea level, it covered 78 nautical miles in 15 minutes, increasing its altitude by 34,647 feet. The enroute climb phase was followed by a level cruise, which lasted 13 minutes and covered 80 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, decreasing its altitude by 1,516 feet in 2 minutes, before entering another level cruise phase that lasted 233 minutes and covered 467 nautical miles. The flight continued with multiple enroute climb and level cruise phases, with notable stops in Saskatchewan, Canada, and Alaska, United States. The final approach to runway 15 at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport was initiated from the north, with the aircraft touching down 529 meters beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 170 kt.
The landing distance of 1,752 meters, or 55% of the runway, was slightly above the target. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, but the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.4 meters from the centerline. The total flight distance was 2,361 nautical miles, taking 390 minutes, and the aircraft used 7,359 kilograms of fuel. The taxiing period after landing was 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile.
The aircraft touched down on runway 15 at PANC Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, a 3,189-meter-long runway, after a final approach from the north. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a heading of 165.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,487 feet above ground level. However, the threshold height at 80 feet above ground level was significantly above the target, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal approach path.
The touchdown characteristics were not ideal, with a speed of 170 knots being too fast and a touchdown rate of -472 feet per minute being hard. The touchdown point was 529 meters beyond the touchdown zone, indicating a slight over-shoot. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, showing a high degree of control and precision during the final stages of the approach. The threshold speed of 181 knots was also too high, indicating a need for adjustment in the approach configuration.
The aircraft's rollout was satisfactory, with a total landing distance of 1,752 meters, which is 55% of the runway length. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.4 meters from the centreline, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal path. Overall, the landing performance scored 78.2%, indicating a good but not exceptional performance. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 1°C, may have contributed to the slightly above-average approach and landing performance.
