Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,498 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,498 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 206 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a PA28 Arrow III, then departed from runway 19 at KEMT San Gabriel Valley Airport. The takeoff distance was 323 meters, which accounted for 35% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 75 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 220 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft climbed to an altitude of 4,244 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,960 feet from the initial altitude of 1,284 feet, in just 3 minutes and covering 5 nautical miles.
The enroute climb continued with multiple segments, each involving a climb to a higher altitude. The first of these climbs started overhead El Monte, California, and took the aircraft from 4,413 feet to 5,625 feet in 3 minutes and covering 7 nautical miles. The second climb started 1 mile south of San Dimas and lasted 3 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles. The third climb began 1 mile northwest of Chino and took the aircraft from 6,399 feet to 7,441 feet in 3 minutes and covering 7 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise segments were interspersed between the climbs, with the first starting overhead La Puente and lasting 2 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The second cruise segment began 2 miles east of KONT Ontario International Airport and lasted 2 minutes, covering 5 nautical miles. The third cruise segment started 1 mile west of Glen Avon and lasted 3 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The enroute descent segments began with a descent from 7,922 feet to 2,584 feet in 5 minutes and covering 4 nautical miles, starting 1 mile southwest of Fontana. The second descent started overhead KCNO Chino Airport and took the aircraft from 3,017 feet to 877 feet in 4 minutes and covering 1 nautical mile.
The final approach to runway 03 at KCNO Chino Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 44.0 degrees at 0 nautical miles and 259 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 205 meters and a touchdown speed of 67 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was smooth at -140 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 240 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 378 meters, which accounted for 25% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 45 nautical miles, taking 31 minutes, and the aircraft used 19 kilograms of fuel.
The PA28 Arrow III aircraft successfully landed on runway 03 at KCNO Chino Airport, achieving a high score of 98.0%. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 44.0° at an altitude of 259 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 76 kt, suggesting that the pilot may have been slightly aggressive in their approach. Despite this, the touchdown distance of 205 meters was good, indicating that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent.
The touchdown speed of 67 kt was a little fast, which may have been due to the pilot's slightly aggressive approach. However, the touchdown rate of -140 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating that the pilot had maintained control over the aircraft's descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot had maintained a stable and controlled approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 4 kt from 240°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 kt, while the tailwind component was 3 kt. These conditions would have made the landing relatively straightforward.
The total landing distance of 378 meters was 25% of the runway length, indicating that the pilot had maintained a good level of control over the aircraft's descent and rollout. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot had maintained a stable and controlled rollout.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the pilot achieving a high score of 98.0%. However, there were some minor issues with the threshold speed and touchdown speed, which may have been due to the pilot's slightly aggressive approach.
