Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,556 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,556 m of the 2,967 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 410 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 26 at LFLC Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,643 meters, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 164 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 20°C, a wind speed of 7 knots at 190°, with a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 2 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb from 2,128 feet above sea level to 37,407 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,279 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 117 nautical miles. The climb started overhead LFLC Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport Aulnat, located in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region of France. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 80 minutes and covered a distance of 566 nautical miles. This phase began 1 mile south of Montalzat, a town located in the Occitanie region of France.
The enroute descent phase started 27 miles northeast of GMTA Cherif Al Idrissi Airport Al Hoceima, located in the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region of Morocco. During this phase, the aircraft descended from 37,779 feet above sea level to 3,176 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,603 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 119 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 27 at GMFF Fes Saïss International Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 270.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,289 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 27 at GMFF Fes Saïss International Airport was successful, with a touchdown distance of 409 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 142 knots, and the touchdown rate was excellent at -98 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 20°C, a wind speed of 3 knots at 149°, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots.
Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 811 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 136 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 5,338 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at GMFF Fes Saïss International Airport, achieving a high score of 98.8%. The final approach to runway 27 was conducted from the east, heading 270.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,289 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 142 knots, which may have been due to various factors such as wind conditions or pilot adjustments. The touchdown distance of 409 meters was also within acceptable limits, demonstrating a well-executed landing.
Despite a slightly fast touchdown speed of 137 knots, the aircraft's touchdown rate of -98 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating a controlled and stable descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and wind speeds of 3 knots from 149°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the tailwind component was 2 knots. These conditions likely contributed to the smooth and controlled landing.
The total landing distance of 1,479 meters was 50% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed well, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating a high level of control and precision.
