Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,520 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,520 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 203 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 11 at PAPB St George Airport. The takeoff distance was 651 meters, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 138 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of -9°C and a wind speed of 19 knots at an angle of 45°. This resulted in a crosswind of 19 knots and a headwind of 6 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southeast of PAPB St George Airport. The climb took 39 minutes and covered a distance of 292 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,383 feet above sea level to 40,913 feet above sea level, an increase of 39,530 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 22 miles west of 36H Squaw Harbor Seaplane Base. This phase lasted for 144 minutes and covered a distance of 1,108 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting at a latitude of 51.3874352 and a longitude of -130.7340828. The descent took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 115 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 41,002 feet above sea level to 2,719 feet above sea level, a decrease of 38,283 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 14 miles northwest of CAW5 Port Hardy Seaplane Base. This phase lasted for only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 7 miles northwest of CAW5 Port Hardy Seaplane Base. The descent took 2 minutes and covered a distance of 8 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 2,700 feet above sea level to 1,425 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,275 feet.
The final approach to runway 11 at CYZT Port Hardy Airport was made from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 130.0° at an altitude of 1,366 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 11, which had a length of 1,520 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target speed of 130 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 204 meters, but the touchdown speed of 123 knots was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -252 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8°C and a wind speed of 10 knots at an angle of 143°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 10 knots.
The total landing distance was 628 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The total flight distance was 1,536 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 196 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 8,090 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at CYZT Port Hardy Airport, achieving a high score of 98.6%. The final approach to runway 11 was initiated from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 130.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,366 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed on runway 11, which has a length of 1,520 meters. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was above the target speed of 130 kt, which may have been due to the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to maintain a higher speed for a smoother touchdown.
The touchdown distance of 204 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and land smoothly. However, the touchdown speed of 123 kt was slightly faster than the target speed, which may have resulted in a slightly longer rollout distance. The touchdown rate of -252 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown relatively smoothly.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 8°C and a wind speed of 10 kt from 143°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, while the headwind component was 10 kt, which helped to reduce the landing distance.
The total landing distance of 628 meters was 41% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and align with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and handling characteristics. The pilots' decision to maintain a higher threshold speed and the favorable weather conditions contributed to the successful outcome of the landing.
