Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,054 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 498 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
This flight took off from Bemidji Regional Airport's runway 07 in a Kodiak 100 aircraft. The departure roll began at the airport and covered 208 meters, which represents 12% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 82 knots. The initial local weather conditions were a temperature of 14°C, winds of 12 knots at a direction of 110 degrees, with a 7-knot crosswind component and a 10-knot headwind component.
After departing from Bemidji Regional Airport, the enroute climb started 1 mile east of the airport, where the aircraft ascended from a height of 2,387 feet above sea level to 9,122 feet above sea level. This increase of 6,735 feet was achieved in 6 minutes while covering a distance of 13 nautical miles. After reaching the desired altitude, the aircraft began its level cruise, starting 8 miles south of Blackduck and lasting for 14 minutes as it covered 42 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 5 miles west of MN03 Bolduc Seaplane Base, and from 9,143 feet above sea level, the aircraft descended to 3,219 feet above sea level. This decrease of 5,924 feet was achieved in 9 minutes while covering 20 nautical miles. Following this, another level cruise was initiated 7 miles north of Keewatin, lasting for 5 minutes as the aircraft covered 6 nautical miles. A final descent started 1 mile north of Hibbing, where the aircraft descended from 3,152 feet above sea level to 2,622 feet above sea level, a decrease of 529 feet achieved in 2 minutes while covering 2 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 13 at KHIB Range Regional Airport was initiated from the north-west, heading at 132.0 degrees for a distance of 4 nautical miles at an altitude of 1,266 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 13 took place with a good threshold height, however, the threshold speed was slightly above the target of 72 knots at 72 kt. The touchdown speed was 63 knots, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -116 feet per minute.
The touchdown point was 362 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 41.3 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 15°C, with winds of 18 knots at a direction of 109 degrees, a 7-knot crosswind component, and a 17-knot headwind component. The total landing distance was 1,182 meters, which represents 58% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 48.3 meters from the centerline.
The taxiing to the parking from the runway took 4 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 92 nautical miles, and it took a total of 46 minutes to complete the flight, using 104 kilograms of fuel in the process.
The latest landing attempt of the Kodiak 100 aircraft has been analyzed, resulting in a final score of 76.7%. This score indicates that while the pilot performed certain aspects of the landing well, there were some areas that required improvement.
As the aircraft approached the runway from the northwest, heading 132.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles (nm) and an altitude of 1,266 feet above ground level (agl), it demonstrated good control throughout the approach. The pilot maintained a smooth touchdown, with a speed of 63 knots at the exact moment of touchdown, which is in line with the recommended target.
However, the pilot failed to achieve the desired threshold speed, which was slightly above the target of 72 knots. Nevertheless, the touchdown point, located 362 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, was not excessively far off. The aircraft's descent rate also exhibited a smooth -116 feet per minute (fpm).
In terms of the alignment during landing, the pilot faced difficulties. The runway touchdown position showed significant misalignment, with an excessive deviation of 41.3 meters from the centerline. Similarly, the airplane continued to run off the centerline for an even longer distance, with a total deviation of 48.3 meters, which highlights the need for improved alignment skills.
Weather conditions at the time of landing were mild, with a temperature of 15°C, a wind speed of 18 knots at 109°, and a crosswind of 7 knots and headwind of 17 knots. The total landing distance was 1,182 meters, which represents approximately 58% of the runway length. Overall, while the pilot demonstrated some proficiency in landing the aircraft, there are areas that require attention and improvement.
