Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,014 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 383 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 01 at Simón Bolívar International Airport (SKSM) in Santa Marta, Colombia. The takeoff distance was 1,063 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 147 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 21 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 6 knots. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile north of the airport and continued for 26 minutes. During this period, the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 859 feet above sea level to 32,654 feet, an increase of 31,796 feet. The enroute climb covered a distance of 189 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 3 miles southwest of La Concepción Airport (SKQR) in Pueblo Nuevo, Colombia. This phase lasted for 14 minutes and covered a distance of 115 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started overhead Marinilla, Colombia. The descent phase lasted for 18 minutes and covered a distance of 88 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 33,298 feet to 5,620 feet.
The final approach to runway 08 at Matecaña International Airport (SKPE) was made from the west, with a heading of 72.0 degrees at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,227 feet above ground level. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 29 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 310 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the tailwind component was 1 knot. The aircraft landed on runway 08, which had a length of 2,014 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 141 knots.
The touchdown distance was 384 meters, which was good, and the touchdown speed was 132 knots, also good. The touchdown rate was perfect at 91 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 1,289 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 399 nautical miles and took 66 minutes. The aircraft used 3,630 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Matecaña International Airport, achieving a perfect score of 100.0%. The final approach to runway 08 was initiated from the west, with a heading of 72.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,227 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft demonstrated excellent control and precision during the landing, with a good threshold height and speed. The threshold speed was maintained at 141 knots, which is a critical factor in ensuring a safe and controlled touchdown. The touchdown distance of 384 meters was also within the acceptable range, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 29°C and a gentle wind of 2 knots from a direction of 310°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, and the tailwind component was even less at 1 knot. These conditions contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The touchdown speed of 132 knots was also within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of 91 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for a controlled touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, demonstrating the pilot's skill and precision in navigating the aircraft to the runway.
The total landing distance of 1,289 meters was 64% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This indicates that the pilot was able to maintain a high level of control and precision throughout the landing, resulting in a smooth and stable touchdown.
Finally, the runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft during the critical phase of landing. Overall, the landing was a textbook example of precision and control, and the pilot's skills and experience were evident throughout the entire process.
