Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,000 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 723 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft taxied from the parking area to runway 01 at SKSM Simón Bolívar International Airport in 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 01, the aircraft used 591 m of runway, representing 35 % of the available length, and lifted off at 90 kt; local weather reported a temperature of 32 °C, wind 3 kt from 250°, a 2 kt crosswind and a 1 kt tailwind.
Climb commenced 2 miles north of SKSM, with the airplane ascending from 806 ft asl to 5,434 ft asl, a gain of 4,628 ft in 6 minutes while covering 23 nm.
The first cruise segment began 18 miles north-east of Santa Marta and lasted 35 minutes, during which 146 nm were flown.
Descent started 11 miles west of SVMC La Chinita International Airport, descending from 5,508 ft asl to 1,491 ft asl, a loss of 4,017 ft in 6 minutes and covering 25 nm.
A brief cruise followed 3 miles east of SVMC, lasting 2 minutes and spanning 6 nm.
The second descent began 2 miles south-west of Maracaibo, dropping from 1,210 ft asl to 711 ft asl, a decrease of 500 ft in 3 minutes while covering 8 nm.
On final approach to runway 21R at SVMC, the aircraft approached from the north on a heading of 202.0° at 4 nm and 491 ft agl; weather at the time was 30 °C with calm wind.
Landing on runway 21R, which is 3,000 m long, occurred with a threshold speed of 95 kt; touchdown was 292 m beyond the touchdown zone at 81 kt, a rate of minus 169 fpm, and the wheel track was 3.6 m off centreline.
Runway rollout covered a distance of 1,168 m, equal to 39 % of the runway, and alignment during rollout was reported as perfect.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 216 nm, took 60 minutes, and consumed 196 kg of fuel.
The TBM 930 began its final approach to runway 21R at SVMC La Chinita International Airport from the north, tracking a heading of 202.0° at 4 nm and 491 ft agl. The approach was assessed as unstable at the 1,000 ft gate, being off the glideslope.
At the threshold the runway length was 3,000 m and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was well above target at 95 kt.
Touchdown occurred 292 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 81 kt, described as a little fast. The touchdown rate was good at minus 169 fpm and the touchdown point was slightly misaligned by 3.6 m from the centreline. Total landing distance was 1,168 m, representing 39 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was perfect.
Maintain the target approach speed to keep the threshold speed within limits and adjust flare timing to achieve a touchdown speed closer to the intended VREF, which will also help place the aircraft within the touchdown zone and improve centreline alignment.
