Slow down before tight turns
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,630 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,630 m of the 4,265 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 239 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A320, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KDEN Denver International Airport. This process took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 34L, and the takeoff distance was 2,283 meters, which accounted for 47% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 151 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of KDEN, it encountered local weather conditions of 6°C temperature and a wind speed of 7 knots at 70 degrees. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. The enroute climb began 2 miles northwest of the airport and involved a vertical ascent of 29,624 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 117 nautical miles. The aircraft climbed from an initial altitude of 6,362 feet above sea level to a final altitude of 35,986 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 24 miles east of the 80V Medicine Bow Airport in Wyoming. This phase lasted for 29 minutes and covered a distance of 549 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 1 mile south of Magrath in Alberta, Canada. The descent involved a vertical decrease of 31,395 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 108 nautical miles. The aircraft descended from an initial altitude of 36,259 feet above sea level to a final altitude of 4,864 feet.
The final approach to runway 35R at CYYC Calgary International Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 0.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,299 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 4,265 meters, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good at 136 knots, and the touchdown distance was 241 meters, which was 37% of the runway length. However, the touchdown speed of 133 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was hard at -445 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were -2°C temperature and a wind speed of 4 knots at 340 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,570 meters, and the runway rollout alignment was very good. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, which took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 784 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 66 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 5,149 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed on runway 35R at Calgary International Airport (CYYC) with a score of 97.6%. The aircraft approached the runway from the south, heading directly towards the runway at an altitude of 1,299 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles (nm) from the runway threshold.
The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing. The threshold speed of 136 knots was also within the acceptable range, indicating that the pilot had properly configured the aircraft for landing. The touchdown distance of 241 meters was also satisfactory, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent and speed.
However, there were a few areas for improvement. The touchdown speed of 133 knots was slightly faster than the recommended speed, which may have resulted in a harder touchdown. The touchdown rate of -445 feet per minute (fpm) was also considered hard, indicating that the aircraft may have touched down with a bit too much force. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, which is a testament to the pilot's skill and attention to detail.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of -2 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 340 degrees. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,570 meters was 37% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot had properly configured the aircraft for landing and had executed the landing smoothly. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated a high level of skill and proficiency. However, there were a few areas for improvement, particularly with regards to the touchdown speed and rate.
