Paamiut Airport is a small regional STOLport serving the town of Paamiut in the Sermersooq municipality of southwestern Greenland. Operated by Greenland Airports, it links the community to Nuuk and Qaqortoq and is the only airfield between those two towns able to handle Air Greenland's STOL aircraft, making it a distinctive stop for pilots exploring this remote coastline.

Overview

Paamiut Airport is a small public airfield serving the town of Paamiut on Greenland's southwest coast. It is operated by the Greenland Airport Authority (Mittarfeqarfiit, now Greenland Airports) and handles scheduled STOL services with Air Greenland. Its remote coastal setting and short hard runway make it a notable destination for pilots interested in Greenland's regional airfield network.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies about 1 nautical mile (roughly 1.9 km) northeast of the town of Paamiut, in the Sermersooq municipality of southwestern Greenland.

Runways

Paamiut has a single physical runway, 17/35, surfaced in hard material (asphalt) and measuring 2,618 ft in length. There is no ILS or other instrument approach aid at the field.

Radio & Navigation

No communications frequencies are published for Paamiut Airport, and there is no ILS available; pilots should expect an uncontrolled or minimally-served environment and plan accordingly.

History

Paamiut Airport opened on 1 December 2007, replacing an earlier heliport that had served the town at a site slightly to the southwest. Since opening, it has become the only airport between Nuuk and Qaqortoq capable of handling Air Greenland's STOL aircraft, giving Paamiut a year-round fixed-wing link that the previous heliport could not provide.

The Airfield Today

Paamiut Airport is operated by Greenland Airports and continues to serve as the town's link to the wider Greenlandic air network, with Air Greenland operating flights to Nuuk and Qaqortoq. The airport offers basic passenger facilities including parking, Wi-Fi, and provisions for disabled travellers; the town itself is about 1.4 km away and is often reached on foot, as there is no local taxi or bus service.
