Fredericton International Airport (CYFC) serves the city of Fredericton, New Brunswick, from a site at Lincoln, some seven nautical miles southeast of the city centre. It is a National Airports System field with two long paved runways, a control tower and scheduled airline service, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for visiting VFR traffic.

Overview

Fredericton International Airport lies at Lincoln, New Brunswick, about 7 nautical miles southeast of Fredericton itself, and also serves nearby Oromocto. It is owned by Transport Canada and operated by the Fredericton International Airport Authority as part of the National Airports System, and was designated an international airport in 2007, reflecting Canada Border Services Agency staffing capable of handling aircraft with up to 55 passengers (or 140 if offloaded in stages). For a simulator pilot it offers two substantial hard-surfaced runways, an ILS, and the character of a modest regional airline gateway rather than a major hub, making it a satisfying but manageable airport to fly into.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits at Lincoln, New Brunswick, roughly 7 nautical miles (13 km) southeast of the city of Fredericton, and also serves the community of Oromocto. Area traffic and overflying aircraft communicate with Moncton Centre on 124.3 MHz. The airport itself operates with an aerodrome frequency of 119 MHz used both as an air-to-ground (A/G) and mandatory frequency (MF) channel, with 119 MHz also given as the radio call frequency (RDO).

Runways

Fredericton has two physical runways. Runway 09/27 is 7,964 feet long, has a hard surface, is lit, and is served by an ILS on runway 09. Runway 15/33 is 5,969 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, but without instrument approach aids. Field elevation is 56 feet above mean sea level.

Radio & Navigation

The published aerodrome frequency is 119 MHz, used as an A/G (air-to-ground) and mandatory frequency (MF) channel, with the same frequency, 119 MHz, listed for radio calls (RDO). Traffic in the surrounding area works Moncton Centre on 124.3 MHz. Runway 09 is equipped with an ILS, providing an instrument approach into the field; no other navaid detail is given.

History

The current terminal at Fredericton was built in 1963, comprising a five-storey control tower flanked by single-storey departure and arrival wings, with subsequent additions completed between 2004 and 2006 and again in 2009. Traffic grew rapidly through the 2000s: aircraft movements rose from 34,078 in 2008 to 73,330, an increase of 115 percent, which prompted Nav Canada to establish a control tower at the airport in 2009/2010. The following year, 2009, movements rose a further 44.8 percent to 106,178, making Fredericton the 19th-busiest airport in Canada that year and, notably, the only airport in the national top twenty still without air traffic control for part of that period. Transport Canada designated Fredericton an international airport in 2007. In 1997, Air Canada Flight 646, a Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet, crash-landed at the airport and struck a tree; there were no fatalities. A major terminal expansion and renovation, costing around 30 million Canadian dollars and increasing terminal size by 50 percent, began in mid-2018, ran for some 30 months, and was completed in 2021, adding ticket counters, washrooms and seating and improving energy efficiency.

The Airfield Today

Fredericton International remains a scheduled airline gateway, with services including Air Canada and Air Canada Express to Toronto-Pearson, Montreal-Trudeau and Ottawa, Air Canada Rouge to Toronto-Pearson, seasonal Air Transat flights to Cancun, Porter Airlines to Ottawa and Toronto-Billy Bishop, and seasonal WestJet service to Calgary. The airport maintains its own aircraft rescue and fire-fighting capability, comprising two ARFF vehicles and a tanker, with mutual aid arrangements involving the city of Fredericton, Oromocto and CFB Gagetown. Passenger traffic has grown strongly in recent years, reaching 377,346 passengers in 2024, making it the second-busiest airport in New Brunswick after Greater Moncton International. The field also serves as a home base for a small number of based pilots.
