Detmold Airfield is a small grass-and-hard-surface strip on the north-eastern outskirts of Detmold in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, once part of the British Army's Hobart Barracks complex. Today it is a lively home for gliding and light aviation, and its wooded surrounds and single hard runway make it an interesting short VFR hop for simulator pilots exploring the Teutoburg Forest area.

Overview

Detmold Airfield sits at the edge of the town of Detmold, in the Teutoburg Forest region of North Rhine-Westphalia. It began life as a military airfield and later formed part of the British Army's Hobart Barracks before being released for civilian flying. It is now used chiefly by a local air sports club, and its history as a British military field together with its present-day gliding activity give it a distinctive character for the visiting sim pilot.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies on the north-eastern outskirts of Detmold. The nearest airfields are Steinheim, about 13 kilometres to the south-east, and Blomberg, about 14 kilometres to the east. Traffic in the wider area is served by Langen Information for flight information.

Runways

Detmold has a single physical runway, 09/27, surfaced in hard material and 1186 feet long. Both directions are lit, and the field elevation is 620 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can contact Langen Information, an AFIS service, on 119.825 MHz. A separate frequency, 135.06 MHz, is used by Detmold Radio for aerodrome information. There is no ILS at Detmold.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

Aircraft are required to avoid overflying the town of Detmold and the former barracks area below 1500 feet, a restriction that reflects the field's proximity to built-up areas and its military heritage.

Visual Reference Points

The airfield can be approached via the Ehrenfriedhof area on its eastern side, from which a short walk leads to the aerodrome; a local recreational trail loops around the airfield boundary, passing close to the tower and offering views over the gliding operations, which can serve as a useful ground landmark when orientating for the approach.

History

Detmold Airfield began as a military airfield, and parts of its wartime infrastructure were deliberately destroyed shortly before the Allied advance reached the area in March 1945. After the war it came under British control and formed part of the Hobart Barracks garrison, remaining a British military airfield until the 1990s, when it was released for civilian aviation use.

The Airfield Today

The airfield is now operated by the Detmold Air Sports Club (LSV Detmold), which runs gliding and general light aviation activity from the site. Free parking is available for visitors near the field. Scenery for the airfield has been produced for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 by FlightSim Studio AG.
