Welshpool Airport, known locally as Mid Wales Airport, is a small licensed aerodrome set in the scenic Severn valley in Powys, Wales. Operated by Mid Wales Airport Limited, it caters for flying training, pleasure flying and general aviation traffic, and is notable as one of the operating bases for the Wales Air Ambulance. For a simulator pilot, its setting amid the open, hilly flying country of mid-Wales, close to the River Severn, makes it an attractive and visually distinctive VFR destination.
The airfield sits about 2 nautical miles south of the town of Welshpool in Powys, Wales, in the Severn valley, an area often described as offering some of the most open and attractive flying country in the UK. It holds a CAA Ordinary Licence (Number P865), which permits public transport flights and flying instruction under the licensee, Mid Wales Airport Limited.
Welshpool has a single physical runway, 04/22, of hard surface construction. Runway 04 is 2999 ft long and Runway 22 is 2964 ft long, and both directions are lit, making the field usable for night operations.
Welshpool operates an Air/Ground radio service on a frequency of 128 MHz. There is no ILS at the airfield, so approaches are flown visually.
The airfield lies in the Severn valley approximately 2 nautical miles south of Welshpool town, with the River Severn providing a useful visual lead-in feature for pilots approaching from the north.
Welshpool Airport was founded by Bob Jones near the farm he owned, beginning operations as a grass strip in 1990 before expanding into a fully fledged civil aviation aerodrome. It subsequently gained a CAA Ordinary Licence and became licensed for night use, allowing it to support public transport flights and flying instruction under Mid Wales Airport Limited.
The airport remains open to the public and supports pleasure flights, flying lessons and general aviation movements, with operators based on site including a flying school and helicopter and microlight operations. Both Avgas 100LL and Jet A1 fuel are available, and the airfield has an onsite café along with aviation medical clinics held on site. Prior permission is required before flying in, and visiting pilots are advised to arrange this through the airport's online PPR system.
