Beja Airport/Airbase (LPBJ) is a joint civil-military aerodrome in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, built around a pair of very long hard-surfaced runways that reflect its role as a Portuguese Air Force base. Beja Airport/Airbase sits just outside the town of Beja in the Alentejo region of Portugal, roughly 623 feet above sea level. It functions as a dual-use aerodrome, combining civil air services with Base Aérea Nº 11 (BA11) of the Portuguese Air Force. Its most striking feature for a visiting pilot is the sheer scale of its runways, which run well beyond 12,000 feet in length, a legacy of its military heritage and a point of interest for anyone flying in on the simulator.
The airfield lies in the Distrito de Beja, near the town of Beja itself, at coordinates 38.0789 N, 7.9325 W. As a facility combining military and civil operations, it can be expected to sit within controlled airspace appropriate to its status, supported by approach, ground and tower services.
Beja has two parallel hard-surfaced runway pairs. Runway 01L/19R is 12,230 feet long on the 01L threshold and 12,216 feet on the 19R threshold, both ends lit, with an ILS serving runway 19R. Runway 01R/19L is 10,490 feet long from the 01R threshold and 10,454 feet from the 19L threshold, also hard-surfaced and lit throughout. The slight differences in published length between reciprocal ends reflect displaced thresholds rather than separate strips.
Radio services at Beja comprise Approach on 130.1 MHz, Ground on 23.4 MHz and Tower on 130.4 MHz. The field is equipped with an instrument landing system serving runway 19R, giving pilots a precision approach option in addition to visual arrivals.
With dedicated approach, ground and tower frequencies in operation, Beja functions as a controlled aerodrome, and arriving traffic should expect to work with air traffic control for joining and circuit sequencing rather than following an uncontrolled visual pattern.
