Totegegie Airport sits on a remote reef in the Gambier Islands, French Polynesia, some 9 km northeast of Rikitea and roughly 1,650 km from Tahiti. It serves as the vital air link for the Gambier group and is the closest airport to Pitcairn Island, though reaching Pitcairn itself still requires a long boat crossing from Mangareva.

Overview

Totegegie Airport is a remote territorial aerodrome built on Totegegie, a reef forming part of Mangareva's atoll system in the Gambier Islands of French Polynesia. It has only a single building on the reef and exists almost solely to provide air access to the Gambier group, making it a fascinating and isolated destination for the virtual long-haul or bush-flying pilot. Its most notable claim is as the closest airport to the Pitcairn Islands, though onward travel there requires a 32-hour boat journey from Mangareva.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies on Totegegie Island, one of the reefs of Mangareva atoll, about 9 km northeast of the village of Rikitea, which serves as the administrative centre of the Gambier Islands. It is extremely isolated, situated some 1,652 km from Tahiti's Fa'a'ā International Airport, with no other airfields nearby.

Runways

Totegegie has a single physical runway, 12/30, some 6,578 ft long on runway 30 and 5,716 ft on runway 12, surfaced in hard-standing (asphalt) and lit. There is no ILS approach available.

Radio & Navigation

An AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) operates on 118.3 MHz, providing traffic information to arriving and departing aircraft rather than a full air traffic control service.

Visual Reference Points

The airfield occupies the whole of the small reef island of Totegegie, making it visually distinctive against the surrounding lagoon and reef structure. Rikitea, the main settlement on Mangareva, lies about 9 km to the southwest and is a useful reference point when transiting between the airfield and the inhabited islands.

History

The runway, originally some 3,500 metres long, was built in 1967 during French military nuclear testing activity associated with the Centre d'Expérimentation du Pacifique. The first aircraft to land was a Piper Aztec in 1968, and that same year a DC-6 began weekly service linking Totegegie, Mururoa and Papeete. The first regular commercial air link to Papeete was established in 1978. French army buildings on the site were decommissioned in 1998, with around 50 tons of scrap metal cleared from the former military installation. The terminal was expanded and modernised in 2008.

The Airfield Today

Totegegie remains the only airport serving the Gambier Islands and functions as the outside world's principal link to the group, with onward boat connections from Rikitea reaching as far as Pitcairn Island. Commercial air service is limited, historically operating to Tahiti's Fa'a'ā International Airport on a weekly basis. The single terminal building, expanded in 2008, remains the only structure on the reef.
