Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,876 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 110 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight, aboard a Boeing 737-MAX8, started with a taxiing period of 9 minutes from the parking area to the runway. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll occurred on runway 08 at Jacksonville International Airport, known as KJAX. The takeoff distance was 1,006 meters, which represented 33% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off the ground at a speed of 165 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it passed over areas of significant local interest. It initiated the enroute climb approximately 1 mile south west of the Villages Regional Hospital Heliport in The Villages, Florida. From a starting altitude of 784 feet above sea level, the aircraft ascended to 35,925 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,141 feet. This ascent took 16 minutes and covered a distance of 105 nautical miles.
Following the steep ascent, the aircraft began its enroute level cruise 9 miles south east of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. During the 65-minute cruise phase, the aircraft traveled 534 nautical miles at a steady altitude. As the aircraft approached its destination, it initiated a gradual descent 1 mile south west of Mullica Landing in New Jersey. The descent, from 35,483 feet above sea level to 1,336 feet above sea level, lasted 19 minutes and covered 93 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 14 at Republic Airport, known as KFRG, occurred from the north west, at an angle of 132.0 degrees. The aircraft was then only 4 nautical miles away and 1,251 feet above ground level. After successfully executing the approach, the aircraft landed on runway 14, which had a length of 1,876 meters. The touchdown occurred at a speed of 122 knots and a distance of 106 meters. Local weather conditions at the point of landing included a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and winds of 16 knots at an angle of 160 degrees.
The aircraft experienced a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 14 knots during the landing. Despite these conditions, the touchdown rate of -270 feet per minute was slightly less than ideal, indicating a slightly steeper descent than planned. However, the threshold speed, touchdown distance, and speed all met or exceeded expectations, demonstrating the aircraft's reliable performance during the landing phase. The aircraft finished its landing on the runway at a point 33% of the runway's length and with a total landing distance of 611 meters.
Following the landing, the pilot then taxied the aircraft to the parking area, a process which took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile of distance. The aircraft completed its journey, covering a total distance of 739 nautical miles and consuming 3,793 kilograms of fuel in the process, which took a total flight time of 113 minutes.
The Boeing 737-MAX 8 aircraft successfully landed on runway 14 at KFRG Republic Airport. The approach and touchdown conditions were generally good, with the aircraft arriving at the final approach fix at 4 nautical miles (nm) and 1,251 feet above ground level (agl) at a heading of 132.0°. The pilot's threshold speed was maintained at 127 knots (kt), which is within the acceptable range.
The pilot's control of the aircraft during the approach and touchdown phases was also satisfactory, as evidenced by the touchdown distance of 106 meters. The touchdown speed of 122 kt was also within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown rate of -270 feet per minute (fpm) was rated as fair, indicating that the pilot may have experienced some difficulty in controlling the rate of descent during the final phase of the approach.
Another issue that was observed was the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position with the runway centerline by 4.1 meters. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 14.7 meters. The total landing distance of 611 meters was 33% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range.
Weather conditions during the landing were generally good, with a temperature of 25 °C and a headwind of 14 kt at 160°, and a crosswind of 8 kt. These wind conditions may have contributed to the slight misalignment issues during the touchdown and rollout phases.
Overall, the pilot's skills and control of the aircraft during the landing were satisfactory, but there were some areas for improvement, particularly in maintaining a better descent rate control and alignment with the runway centerline during the touchdown and rollout phases.
