Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,166 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 980 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 24 at LIRN Naples International Airport. The takeoff distance was 71 feet, which accounted for 1% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 155 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 63 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 25 knots from a direction of 350 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 23 knots and a tailwind of 9 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead San Pietro a Patierno in Campania, Italy. The climb took 24 minutes and covered a distance of 147 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,329 feet above sea level to 38,656 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 9 miles southwest of Torricella in Puglia, Italy. This phase lasted for 27 minutes and covered a distance of 214 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 2 miles east of Aitoliko in Western Greece, Greece. The descent took 28 minutes and covered a distance of 122 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 38,461 feet to 1,585 feet.
The final approach to runway 03R at LGAV Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 37.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,298 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 986 feet and a touchdown speed of 129 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -254 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at the time of departure, with a temperature of 63 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind speed of 25 knots from a direction of 350 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 18 knots and a headwind of 17 knots. The total landing distance was 4,351 feet, which accounted for 39% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 489 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 92 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 8,673 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (LGAV) on runway 03R. The final approach was executed from the southwest, heading 37.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,298 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated a high level of proficiency in its approach, achieving a score of 99.6%.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 136 knots, which was within the acceptable threshold speed. The touchdown distance of 986 feet was also satisfactory, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 129 knots was within the desired range, further emphasizing the pilot's skill in managing the aircraft's speed during the landing.
However, the touchdown rate of -254 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or oscillation upon touchdown. This could be attributed to various factors, including the aircraft's weight, the runway's surface, or the pilot's technique. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 63°F and a wind speed of 25 knots from a direction of 350°. This resulted in a crosswind of 18 knots and a headwind of 17 knots, which the pilot effectively managed during the landing. The total landing distance of 4,351 feet was 39% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft during the critical phase of landing. Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and skill, showcasing the pilot's expertise in managing the Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
