Improve the takeoff
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,560 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 53 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 01R at KLAS Harry Reid International Airport, where the Van's RV-10 aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 170 meters, which accounted for 7% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 74 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots at 330 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, and the headwind was 2 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb overhead Paradise, Nevada, where it ascended from 3,132 feet above sea level to 3,769 feet above sea level, an increase of 636 feet in less than 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The enroute level cruise then began, lasting 2 minutes and covering 2 nautical miles. Following this, the enroute descent started 2 miles southeast of Paradise, where the aircraft descended from 3,935 feet above sea level to 2,197 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,738 feet in 3 minutes and covering 3 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 01R at KLAS Harry Reid International Airport was made from the south, heading 23.0 degrees at 0 nautical miles and 83 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a threshold speed that was a little below the target at 56 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 51 meters, and the touchdown speed was 54 knots, which was also good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -148 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots at 329 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, and the headwind was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 703 meters, which accounted for 27% of the runway. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.3 meters from the centerline.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway in less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 8 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 8 minutes. The aircraft used 5 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Van's RV-10 aircraft successfully landed at KLAS Harry Reid International Airport, achieving a high score of 93.9%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 23.0° at 0 nm and 83 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 01R, which has a length of 2,560 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 56 knots. The touchdown distance was good, measuring 51 meters, and the touchdown speed was also within acceptable limits at 54 knots. The touchdown rate was smooth, with a descent rate of -148 feet per minute (fpm). The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained precise control during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots from 329°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. These conditions did not appear to pose any significant challenges for the pilot.
However, the total landing distance of 703 meters was slightly higher than expected, accounting for 27% of the runway length. This may be attributed to the slightly below-target threshold speed. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.3 meters from the centreline, which could be improved upon in future landings.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good control and precision during the approach and touchdown phases. With some minor adjustments to the landing technique, the pilot can aim to achieve an even higher score in future landings.
